British Politics
Been on holiday for a few weeks, surprised to find no general discussion of British politics so though I'd kick one off.
Tory leadership contest is quickly turning into farce. Trump has backed Boris, which should be reason enough for anyone with half a brain to exclude him.
Of the other candidates Rory Stewart looks the best of the outsiders. Surprised to see Cleverly and Javid not further up the betting, but not sure the Tory membership are ready for a brown PM.

Regarding the LD leadership contest, Jo Swinson is miles ahead of any other candidate (and indeed any of the Tory lot). Should be a shoe in.
Finally, it's Groundhog Day in Labour - the more serious the anti-Semitism claims get, the more Corbyn's cronies write their own obituary by blaming it on outlandish conspiracy theories - this week, it's apparently the Jewish Embassy's fault...

Are you ever right about anything, ever Mr "I've been to Smithfield at 6am and had a breakfast and a pint" because of course you have.
It exists to service butchers and restaurants etc. They won’t thank you for turning up for a single persons chicken leg and quarter pound of meat order and you’ll probably get eye rolls but by all means give it a go and report back to us…assuming coming to multicultural London doesn’t scare you too much.
the government didn't make the decision btw
Record migration figures
The tories are just awful at everything
Both blue and red varieties are quite good at some things
Haigh gone - Not a great look, and even worse the KS apparently knew about it and decided to promote her anyway.
However, three separate sources claimed she made the false report to benefit personally, with two of the sources alleging she wanted a more modern work handset that was being rolled out to her colleagues at the time.
The now cabinet minister had been working as a public policy manager at Aviva, but two sources said she lost her job at the insurance firm because of the incident.
oh boy the rot started early. Before the apples were picked off the tree from the look of it.
She’s just unlucky to not be in America.
Her behaviour is encouraged here to be president .
She probably would of done better then Harris ….
The rot was already there and started when the Labour hierarchy decided to collude with the media to get rid of stroppy upstart Corbyn.
Though you could argue the rot started much earlier with Blair.
Personally, I think the rot started when Blair started to become obsessed with being a world figure instead of concentrating on Britain
Mandelson taking over the Labour Party before then.
Agreed
Assisted dying bill passes. Quite surprised but (imo) the right decision
About time. I want to know I can top myself in some comfort when I get too decrepit.
Lots of hurdles before it comes into law. I'd hold your breath
Not suggesting this of course but it can't be that hard to get hold of some smack.
Wow .
Here (Canada) been allowed for a while now ….
So late to the « party » 😀

More than two and a quarter million people have signed a petition calling for a general election. This doesn’t mean anything in real terms for Keir Starmer, but it is worthwhile to look at where these signatures are coming from: not population centres, nor cities but rural, shire England.
Bit weird to call it a gang when it’s two guys who didn’t know each other but yeah one getting 27 years should be a bit more noteworthy than it is. Wouldn’t have seen it if not for this post.
LONDON — Nigel Farage, the architect of Brexit now gunning for Britain’s Labour government, thinks he has an ace up his sleeve.
The leader of Britain’s Reform UK Party has in recent days been talking up a partnership with Elon Musk, billionaire tech boss and a key adviser to U.S. President-elect Donald Trump.
Citing “leading businessmen and Conservative Party officials,” The Times this weekend reported on fears among Farage’s political opponents in the U.K. that the world’s richest man is even about to get out his checkbook — to the tune of $100 million — and support Farage’s fight.
I wonder how Clacton's doing for an MP
