Donald J. Trump (For everyone else except Victor)

I assume it's still acceptable to have a Trump thread in a Politics forum?

So this is an obvious lie - basically aimed at

given that the US imports 60% of its oil from Canada and Canada supplies power to, ......

the price of aluminum will be heading north as well..... as USA only mines 3% of a needed component (bauxite). Canada is by far the largest supplier of bauxite to US processing plants.

fair enough, but the point stands that trumpies always excuse any behavior by trump that under any other circumstances they would vehemently claim to be against. they have always been hypocrites but the extent to which conservatives have subscribed to "rules for thee and not for me" is disgusting and we should never let them forget it.

Absolutely agree, just saying watch the friendly fire

Every other country will be thinking about how they can look more towards China.

So, probably things get worse and worse and military tensions with China increase.

What a horrible President.

just wait until they *checks notes* realize that china has 10x more tariffs - jfc man the gut reaction takes here are incredible

China's mean tariff rate is 2.31%.

Pre-Trump USA mean tariff rate was 1.47%.

and free speech is in the Chinese constitution (and it was in the USSR one as well)

lol micro - take a breather bro, you're ideology is taking over your ability to use logic

mean is misleading, this is because the stuff they import in droves like raw materials are untariffed and the stuff they don't import much of at all because the costs are insane as a result of the tariffs means that they have a seemingly low number

the reality is far different and it's at the point where if you want to buy anything american in china, it's always 2-3x the cost of back home due to tariffs - they also are very smart and frame a lot of stuff as value added tax rather than tariffs to avoid complaints about free trade

a lot of it is specially worded taxes which given the obscure language can only apply to foreign brands - or more commonly a universal tax on all of those products which is then refunded back to the consumer if they bought domestic

but point remains, even with all our tariff increases, we're still tariffiing other countries far less than china - which is the entire reason why we are doing this, if china can get away with it, and we're the only competition then why can't we?

It's not ideology. I looked up the tariff rates and that's what it is. You're the one who had to cook up some special version of the tariff rates. And, what does Canada need to export? Raw materials. They can send them to China - and what they send to the USA, will just go to China if that's where it makes more sense.

And you didn't even cook up anything like what you claimed. You were like China has 10x the tariffs and then your chart about USA/China tariffs has China with a slightly higher tariff rate than US has on China (21.1 vs 19.3), so what the hell are you talking about? Was your 10x about the 2x tariffs for the ROW?

Or I guess it's about specially worded obscure language and totally unsupported assertions?

Some of this trade war comes from Elon who knows that without a trade war Chinese EVs will take over the USA EV market. Gas prices going up, and other USA auto manufacturers who make a lot of their parts in Canada works out well for him too.

dfs,

And, of course, obviously, what the **** does that even matter or prove? The existing conditions were some level of trade restrictions with the USA and China. Increasing restrictions with the USA is going to move trade to China. Obviously.

And what does that mean to get away with something? You want to buy a widget from Canada? It's going to cost you 25% more. Now, thanks to the trade war if a Canadian wants to buy a USA widget, that will cost them 25% more. So the holdouts who hadn't yet switched to a cheaper Chinese made widget are now going to be more inclined to switch. Whatever China was doing with respect to Canada or Mexico, USA has now just become even less competitive than before.

So I'm reading Musk and the Doge now have access to the Federal Payment Systems (among other IT systems) and are locking out civil servants from the databases of the American people, and the Trump DOJ want the names of any FBI personnel involved in any way in investigating the Jan 6 insurrection, potentially with a view to firing them (the subject line of the email requesting these names was 'TERMINATION'). (More sinister is they want names of former FBI people that worked on it.... Why?). Apparently this is almost half of all FBI Agents

Is this all Project 2025 stuff? Is this being reported in the American news?

You of all people dont believe in American exceptionalism or Pax Americana dominating the world. Well, now you are getting what you want. This is what post Pax Americana is. America will start behaving like other nations for its own narrow interests, and will pull out of being the world's police man.

The more we turn inward, the less we will be trying to influence the behavior of other nations (except as it narrowly pertains to perceived US interests), which is what you want anyways.

You cant have it both ways. If the world no longer wants to be part of Pax Americana that is fine, but at the same time we are under no obligation to have open borders, allow foreign gangs to operate freely, and be the world's consumer with insane trade deficits.

So China will be the world's superpower now, and will be responsible for taking care of the world. You think the US is evil anyways, so you should welcome us turning inward and handing things over to them.

man Biden put a 100% tariff on Chinese EVs lol

On Sunday, CNN reported that DOGE personnel attempted to improperly access classified information and security systems at the US Agency for International Development (USAID), and that top USAID security officials who thwarted the attempt were subsequently put on leave. The AP reported that DOGE personnel had indeed accessed classified material.

I think almost no one on this site is honest at all and that's why they never even get how posts may be positive rather than normative.

I'm not saying you're right about your post in any way, but you're interpreting my posts as normative was not right.

As far as what I think should be, you're also not right, but you've brought up a lot and there's no way to get into it in a single post even if I wanted to.

Yeah. And Trump says he's raising it to 200%.

I don't like the Chinese government either.

And trade wars are bad and they also can lead to real wars, which are worse.

But, it is more that Trump is stupid and going counter to his own purported purposes than that I personally am bothered by Chinese people getting business.

Fair enough. I am just saying Pax Americana had pros and cons. And post Pax Americana will too.

I don’t think we are going to be militarily invading Middle East nations anymore and trying to impose our moral standards and ideology on them. Which most far leftists and far rightists would say is good.

But we wil also be doing small minded stuff like this in our perceived self interest that probably makes the world a worse place, like most other nations do.

And nations like Canada are going to have to venture out on their own for diplomacy, trade relations and military. And will have to navigate that most of the world sucks and will get suckier without Pax Americana keeping them in line; so they will have to work with bad actors.

It is what it is.

I wouldn't be so sure. Secretary of State is a huge Iran hawk and Trump has already bombed Somalia.

well he said military invading not bombing.

appetite for boots on the ground is veeeeeery low

You think the military dropping bombs on an area is not a military invasion? 😃

That being said I prefer Pax Americana. I want the US to be the worlds police man with support form our allies.

But I also acknowledge the world is going another way. And the American people elected Trump to go in another direction, so it is what it is.
