TV: what have you been watching?
I think The Walking Dead may be the best drama thats currently airing/in production.
There, I said it.
Parts are good, parts are heavy, parts are boring. I would say it's decent but too long. Good luck. lol
Very funny! Only 4 eps.

I thought the 2nd episode was easily the worst, but I loved the rest of it. It's certainly not for everyone though.
You might actually wanna skip this one mrbb if you don't like British shows lol.
Also been watching The Pitt, which I'm enjoying, but man are they overdoing it with the drama. Not even talking about the medical stuff, but all the things that have happened to the staff over the space of a few hours is just ludicrous.

Have you ever seen 24?!
J/K. I kind of agree. I'm all for the chaos when it comes to the ER/patients, but the writers should show a little bit of restraint when it comes to the staff. Also, some of the messaging is a bit forced, but overall, it's great.
Okay just clicked on episode one of Adolescence and no matter what it just has to be better than The Electric State which I just watched and it sucked BALLS! So it has a low bar 😉

So far we've had:
Spoiler
- A doctor fired for stealing pills
- A doctor having a miscarriage
- A nurse punched in the face
- An ambulance stolen
- A student doctor pissed on
- An active shooter situation with a doctor's son
I'm positive there's other stuff I'm forgetting. And all of this is happening on the anniversary of the death of Robby's mentor. And the day is not even over yet! There's enough drama in the ER without all that crap.
Speaking of, I find the whole trauma thing over his mentor really silly and unnecessary. I mean, it was 4 years ago and it's like it just happened yesterday. Get a grip.
The first episode of Adolescence is one of the most riveting hours of television I've ever seen.
Apparently, each of the 4 episodes is all in one shot - no tricks, either, they are all really "one-shot" each. It's like watching a play - you can't take your eyes off it to even check your phone lol. They would rehearse over and over again for weeks before blocking out a week to shoot each episode a few times each.
Stephen Graham stars...long been a favorite of mine. Everyone is top-notch, really. And the young boy who plays the accused is phenomenal.
***
Really disappointed that The Electric State is getting trashed all over. I adore the graphic novels this is from, and thought the limited series of a few years ago about another book in the series, Tales from the Loop, to be absolutely brilliant.
Wait till you get to the 3rd episode. And this was the kid's first ever acting role...
Finished Adolescence.
Spoiler
What a miracle of filmmaking. Bravo Stephen Graham and Jack Thorne.
The 3rd episode with Jamie and the psychologist was astounding. Owen Cooper deserves every acting award known to man. And he was 13 in his first role ever? Hell, everyone deserves plaudits, from the cops to the girl who was best friends with the victim, to the prison guards to the teachers...everyone. Especially the camera crew.
I kind of wish the scene in the 2nd episode when the cop and his son goes for fish and chips was at the end, because it was something nice lol.
That last episode, tho. Holy cow, It broke something inside me. I don't have children and never will, but I cannot imagine going through something so horrible. Graham as the dad, Christine Tremarco as the mom, and Amélie Pease as the daughter...I'm astounded they rehearsed and shot that episode as many times as they did, all the way through, with one shot and no breaks. Reaching into that well of pure emotion and grief and strength. Trying to find a bit of happiness on the dad's 50th birthday as the boy awaits trial in prison.
I was just talking to my GF about this, and we both agreed how lucky we were not to have to grow up in the time of social media and asshats like Andrew Tate. I couldn't imagine having to negotiate adolescence today, with your whole life out there for everyone to see and comment on.
Anyway, this is a must watch. I'm going to make it an assignment for my students to do so. But it is a hard watch. Especially that last episode. Maybe showing it, talking about it, will somehow make it better one day. I don't know.
Fu*k.
Dom, I watched this, and that third episode was terrific. Amazing what good filmmakers can do with a restricted setting (see Kurosawa's High and Low for a master class).
The kid was great, but the father may have been even better. That close up when the kid undresses for the body search knocked me out.
Both the father and the son share that same horrible memory and neither interprets it differently. Such a shame for both of them.

Yeah, I've always loved Stephen Graham as an actor. His face is so expressive.
He's great. Epitomises, for me, the expression, 'face like a bulldog chewing a wasp'.
Haha, I almost posted earlier that he has one of the most expressive faces I've ever seen. He's just mesmerising to watch.
A couple more of his that maybe you haven't seen and I'm almost positive most of you will like:
The Virtues - another 4-part miniseries with a powerhouse performance from Graham. From the guy that made This is England, this is probably heavier than Adolescence.
Boiling Point - movie set in a high-end London restaurant that interestingly is also shot all in one take. You will probably feel exhausted after this one lol.
Maybe watch a comedy in between!
Agree about Adolescence.. Its terrific . It's the kind of great acting and dialogue you can get in UK shows. I guess I would call it a psychological character study more than a crime solving show. Episode 3 was especially amazing to me. It was chilling. I don't know how they did the shot of the outside school area in ep 2 that goes from the ground to a overhead drone like shot. They could do follow-up spin-off shows based on the detective and his son, or on the victim's friend or others. I dont know if they want to try to pull off another single take experience though. That must take tons of effort to do.

the camera crew attaches the camera to a drone as they're shooting and the then the drone operator takes control of the camera. It takes practice, but it's not that hard.
There's some great footage on Youtube of behind the scenes stuff of the show that shows it all...The actors rehearsed for weeks and then there was a tech rehearsal for about a week, to get the actors and crew on the same page...like in the 3rd episode, the one cameraman in the room with the actors learns during rehearsal where his camera should be pointing at the right moments of the script...when to be in close-upo, etc.
Running Point is entertaining...Kate Hudson is fun

Cool thanks. I read that at the end of ep2 you can get a glimpse of the tv crew van driving into the park to catch the drone . Havent checked it yet.
