Grok says:

Was eating chickens a luxury in the early to mid 1900's?

In the early to mid-1900s, eating chicken wasn’t universally considered a luxury, but it wasn’t as common or affordable as it is today. It depended heavily on context—where you lived, your economic status, and how chickens were raised at the time.
Before World War II, chickens were primarily kept for their eggs rather than their meat. Egg production was the main economic driver for poultry farmers, and chickens were often only eaten once they stopped laying or on special occasions. Raising chickens took time and resources—feed, space, and labor—which made them more valuable alive than dead. As a result, chicken meat was somewhat of a treat, especially in urban areas where people relied on markets rather than raising their own birds. In rural settings, families might slaughter a chicken for Sunday dinner or holidays, but it wasn’t an everyday meal.
By the 1920s and 1930s, advances in breeding and farming started to shift things. The development of broiler chickens—birds bred specifically for meat—began to take off, but the industry was still small. Prices reflected this: in the U.S., for example, chicken cost about 30-40 cents per pound in the 1930s (around $6-8 in today’s money), which was pricey compared to staples like beef or pork in some regions. During the Great Depression, meat of any kind could feel luxurious, and chicken wasn’t an exception for many struggling households.
World War II changed the game. With beef and pork rationed, chicken wasn’t subject to the same restrictions, and demand spiked. After the war, industrial farming exploded—think battery cages, better feed, and faster-growing breeds. By the 1950s, chicken prices started dropping, and it became more of a middle-class staple. Still, in the early to mid-1900s overall, it hadn’t fully shed its reputation as a "special" food yet.
So, luxury? Not exactly in the caviar sense, but for many, especially early in the century, it was more of an occasional indulgence than a daily dish.

my electricity bill was 200, and I was trying to save. in my tiny apartment in LA it was 50, and I never tried to save

also my trash bill is 63, and I barely make any trash at all. if they came once a month, I still probably wouldn't fill the garbage, recycling, or whatever the other one is, like plants and branches and stuff? I don't even know. i've never thrown anything in that one

My electric bill was $800 last month - when we lived in town, it was never more than $200. It really clarified why the previous owners heated with a wood stove.

Country living has some surprising costs

Mark K claimed I once made him eat a burger with my picture of a veggie burger because it looked so good. I'm going to try again.

What? No brioche bun?

I AM impressed by the homemade tomato ginger chutney. You must be fun to hang around with.

Not sure if that's sarcasm, but I tend to geek out over cooking, writing, gardening, language studying, reading, television series, and (to a lesser extent) gaming (turn based only--I have zero hand eye coordination.) Someone on reddit once told me to get a hobby--I laughed because if I got any more hobbies, I'd have to give up sleeping.

I have some very nice ciabatta rolls that I could have put the burgers on, but they're frozen at the moment and I didn't want to wait, so I just used some 1.09/8 pack I got from Aldi. It was fine.

I love brie.

We had a dish at the restaurant that was brie melted into a heavy cream reduction with fresh pesto and spinach on pasta. Incredibly rich.

We had another one based on Alouette cheese with vegetables in heavy cream.

Some of the greatest feedback I ever got on a sauce was just roasting garlic and mixing it into mayonnaise (ghetto aioli). People love fat and salt.

Definitely no sarcasm about you being fun to be with. The brioche, yeah. Rather: said in jest.

I, too, am a lover of food and food prep and tech.

Not as good as you, though.

It's like finding hay in a haystack.

I always buy the same brioche buns at Albertsons every time I rack up a reward (MarkK: I do this because the bakery gives you twice the value). I keep them frozen then just throw them in the toaster on the bagel setting and they turn out pretty perfect.

Sounds like a good plan...if my ciubatta rolls will fit in my toaster! They're very jumbo!

I'm a lover of eating food! And I would be all over that. Chomp chomp chomp.

😀

Would you call 320 days of ramen packets per year, food?

It's been over 20 years since I've eaten a package of ramen. Have not missed it.

I saw a package of ribeyes at Costco for $85. I was tempted but couldn't pull the trigger.

It's a pub, right? Great place to talk about food. And beer.

Negro Modelo is my standard, "didn't have time to go to an actual liquor store or figure out what else I might like" beer. Anyone want to recommend something nice and dark and chewy that I might enjoy?

Brownies if you'd fix your damned oven!

you left yourself open to that one

rofl, reasonable comment

I still have six chocolate chocolate chip pancakes to eat up. Tomorrow I'm going to try them with bananas and peanut butter icing, and then Thursday I'm planning to top them with white chocolate raspberry gelato and warm homemade raspberry syrup.
