Netflix "Watch Instantly"
I just recently rejoined Netflix and was pleased to see they have added a "Watch Instantly" feature where you can stream a movie over the internet. The selection of movies/shows is subpar, but it's free baby! Well, free as in no extra charge. You can watch 1 hour for every dollar/month your subscription is and it doesn't affect your queued/shipped movies at all. Minuses are that you have to be running Windows and Internet Explorer, but the quality is great! I have a garbage laptop, but it looks the same as a DVD to me and it hasn't skipped/paused/hiccuped once so far.
Awful in the sense that I wish I wouldn't have bothered and will 100% never watch it again. Just boring and meh. Plus I had to turn subtitles on to understand half the dialogue, lol.
My friends described it as a sad boring story that brings nothing to the table except for a filming gimmick and above average acting.
Doesn't sound like entertainment to me.
Pretty much this exactly. I'm not even sure I'd go so far as to say above average acting. No depth to any of the characters, just drive bys, which I guess fits with the filming gimmick.
Haven't watched The Pitt yet, but with Adolescent it never elicited any emotion other than "Is this almost over yet"? I never laughed, never brought a tear to my eye (happy or sad), never cringed, felt nothing for the victim or the accused. Entertainment makes me feel, whether it be sad, happy, scared, hopeful or disgusted. It makes you want to know what happens next. Brings tears to my eyes, be they sad or joyous. Adolescent did none of those things.
Definitely not boring!

So, you didn't feel for the other parents, students, or parents of the accused?
I can agree that the 3rd episode was a bit much, but it was still great acting.

But Bosch on the other hand….
I’m only two eps into Adolescence but I’m really enjoying it and think the acting is excellent so far. I also have a 14yo son and I also grew up in the UK, so maybe it is particularly scary/relevant for me
Idk there’s a ton of very different shows and movies out there and they all find an audience, so it’s good that we all like different things.
eg I’ve never watched an entire superhero movie and can’t imagine being forced to sit through one and yet a load of my friends absolutely love them
Entertainment is something that is fun and/or interesting or engaging to watch.
Have no clue about The Pitt? Haven't seen it yet. I was talking about Adolesence.
I think that is the difference. It's not supposed to be fun, but it's definitely supposed to be engaging, which I think both shows do well.
This is probably where I make a cheesecake factory joke and we agree to each their own.
Yeah, we all have things we have different/higher standards on that send us down the route of different choices. And I think ‘art’ in its broadest definition is one of the ones that can separate us the most as we use it for different reasons.
30 years ago I was all about highbrow reading - Booker contenders and challenging, nuanced and complex fiction that would make me think about life and the world etc. I still will occasionally read one of these…if on vacation or in a period when life isn’t too difficult. But these days, the majority of my reading (and I read 25-30 books a year) are ‘fast food’ equivalents - Reacher, Grisham, Spy novels etc. I use reading for relaxing now rather than ‘thinking’
Quit Vikings mid season 4. Lost interest in young vikings. Skipped to the deaths of the main characters and then out.
Decided to re-watch Mr Inbetween. So much jam packed into such a short show. Less than 25 half-hour episodes. Goes so quickly, and holds up completely. Starting S3
Mobland was pretty cool with Brosnan and Hardy. However the scene in the bar with the kid just looked implausible, not to mention the last scene, which was ridiculous. But maybe these types of things happen in real life.
The Studio was pretty good, funny enough. There was this odd frantic feeling to it, and then there was that drumming music used on Birdman. I'll definitely keep watching this.

When I was watching the first episode of Gangs of London I was thinking holy ****, first episode of Mobland was just ok, will watch it but I hope it gets better.
Yeah I can totally see Adolescence as being a totally polarizing series ; not polarizing in the sense of shocking by any means, but that there is a fair share of peeps that will absolutely love it and others that will remain indifferent. Truth be told, in this day and age, I fear that many peeps will not have a sufficient level of concentration to truly engage it, sigh 😊
Watched ep 3 tonight. Super intense. Not totally enjoyable tbh but that made me like the show more - I watch way too many easy/fun/relatively disposable shoes
Looking forward to how it finishes
The way they mix sound anymore, I have to turn on the subtitles to EVERYTHING that is relatively new. I don't get it. Characters are always talking in low, hushed voices, slurring words and not enunciating at all, but God forbid there is some background noise because it is going to drown out what remains to be heard from the actors.
Also, no one understands an Irish accent even in real life except for the Irish.
I didn't find the accents that bad and did not need subtitles, but I understand why people might need them. It would make a fun drinking game every time Stephen Graham says "love"
I still found it engaging and very well done. It's also a perfect example for a binge watch as I am not sure it would be nearly as good with weekly releases.

I am for sure an outlier, but I have had subtitles on full time - in Spanish, which is my third language - for 5 years now. It helps to stay productive while doing a passive activity!

Same with a load more British accents. I grew up there and find a lot of them difficult to follow these days
Re the sound….I’m honestly glad you’ve written that - I honestly have been assuming it’s my hearing losing definition as I age
reminds me of this skit:
Broken YouTube LinkThis guy does a pretty good deep dive into why you can't hear dialogue anymore

I watch a lot of foreign shows with English subtitles. Helps me excuse myself from watching too much tv as I can pretend I'm learning different languages...
