POG Politics Thread Version 3
Come on in! Since Dustin is taking his ball and going home, it's time to start a new politics thread.
Dan Rather Facebook post:
When a clown moves into a palace he doesn't become a king, the palace instead becomes a circus.
- Turkish proverb
Kind of funny.
if the Federal Government doesn't start controlling spending and the deficit, there WILL be economic hell to pay
In what sense does the federal government not "control spending"?
What exactly is the issue with a "deficit"?
What economic indicators showed that there was any trouble with the US economy before Trump unilaterally crashed it?
Spoiler
I know "inflation" got thrown around a lot during the election, but after the post-covid spike in 2021-22, it looked to be falling back to normal:
invest in friendships, mental health, and gambol on btc
rental income property might make some money, but it's not worth it to exploit renters for being poor, and needing shelter... same goes for weapons, prisons, and other immoral ****. selling heroin to addicts is more respectable, and snatching purses.
A government is not a business.
Businesses exist to extract value from asymmetries of information and access.
Governments exist to create value from collective bargaining and economy of scale.
The two are fundamentally antithetical in both means and ends.
For a government to make money, it would be drawing more value from its citizens than it provides in return. This is essentially what every revolution is fought over.
The market has determined that American cars are worse than Japanese cars. Japanese cars cost more, and yet they are all over the place here.
Now that Japanese cars are going to cost X amount more, with the price demanded for cars not being impacted, American cars can sell for more. This is "inflation".
The idea that "more factories will be built in America" requires more startup capital (and risk), which means more costs to be deferred onto consumers. This is more "inflation".
When did the GOP forget about comparative advantage??
American car companies are now also structurally disincentivized to improve their products relative to Japanese or other products; they don't have to, Nanny State is protecting them from having to compete on the merits of their products.

I thought govts were supposed to organize societies
Societies are self-organizing.
Governments are an organizational layer superimposed (ideally) to facilitate sustainable cohesion while providing for perpetual growth.
that famous quote "ask not what your country can do for you, but what you can do for your country"
ironically I think(at least currently) the best thing people can do is force their govts(esp in America) to serve the needs of the people, eg to protect the environment, provide healthcare, education, housing, regulate the rich, basically to protect us from the wealthy
and I say esp in America cuz America exports a lot of misery around the world
They were middle class when huge swathes of factory workers had a union, and you could have a house & family with only a high school education. So even if those factories come back (they aren't lol) they won't provide a "middle class" lifestyle, because unions are dying and the government is standing on their throat. Do you think the NLRB (if it still exists) is going to support unions right now?

We should amend our Constitution to provide for recall referenda.
respecting the constitution is absurd and immoral. it was written by slave owning genocidal rapists
I still respect My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy even though it was written by a self-identified Nazi who said slavery was a choice (for the slaves) and is recently giving interviews in full KKK hood and cloak
and Tristan und Isolde is absolutely gorgeous despite having been composed by one of the most poisonous racists in history. batshitting mad antisemite who orchestrated like Mahler possessed by Debussy, before either of those guys were born.
idk if the constitution falls under "separate the art from the artist" - it was mostly written by Madison who pushed for the bill of rights, could have been much worse
there is a huge difference in "separate the art from the artist", and appreciating a piece of art produced by a monster... AND organizing your society, following a blue print written by people who would routinely rape kids because they believed the color of their skin gave them the rights to people's bodies, land, and lives
Step 1:Getting the federal deficit spending under GDP growth rate.
Step 2: Balance the federal budget (Not holding my breath)
Not sure what the most facepalm worthy part of this is.
1) The fact that this is your measure of success.
2) The fact that you think Trump has any prayer of making this happen.
3) The fact that when it doesn't happen, it will not cause you to reassess your priors in any way.
i feel the same way about dave matthews band

constitution doesn't organize the society, just the government
for organizing a society, you want to look to religion, where they rape kids regardless of the color of their skin or the content of their character
or just raw dog Capitalism, which will happily toss kids into a meat grinder for a marginal profit or just to make their Excel columns look prettier
excellent points!
