Because the people who gave the false account and the people doing the investigation aren't the same people. You are acting as if Israel, or even the IDF, is some monolith; where every single person is always on the same page and every bad action is covered up all the way to the top. Which is clearly not true.
But Western press giving bad faith reports of happenings isn't helping anyone, especially the Palestinian people.

This is certainly true. If it was the same people, an investigation would be very unlikely.
I think it is fairly obvious when reading through the lines that the ground units lied in their initial reports, which has put command in a pickle. It should not be necessary to say that when units are caught in a big lie on an issue such as this, this is also a big warning sign.
The question that needs to be pressed is if this went "They were lying, we need to investigate" or if it went "They were caught lying, we need to investigate".
Now historically, IDF actually has a history of being fairly open in its reporting and confirmations on mistakes / blunders / bad operations. They are one of few military forces in the world that openly reports blue-on-blue incidents and casualties for example.
However, a) history of being open does not mean they always are b) years under increasingly nationalistic and corrupt cabinets that abhor transparency will corrode institutions. c) this war is likely scraping the barrel for boots on the ground.

It is a big world. There are plenty of places where criticism of Israel is not only legal, but encouraged. The US will just suffer from all the high value persons who wont be enriching us with their Israeli criticism. And they can go to places like Yemen and Iran where Israel criticism is highly encouraged, and they will be enriched.
Our loss.

the thing is, Khalil wasnt even critical of Israel. he was a 2 stater who felt that if they stopped doing mass murder that both sides could live in peace. thats ofc bullshit and there will never be peace with the genocidal Israeli extremists around.
but he said all the right things and lived up to the liberal ideal. and they still came for him and are in the process of destroying him. they destroy even the Uncle Toms when its even slightly convenient.
the problem is that, just as they did to the Native American identity, or African identy, the White Empire of genocide will do everything it can to destroy the Palestinian identity and rewrite history with violent ethnosupremacist extremists as the good guys.

What are you talking about. They will just deport him. He isn't being destroyed. This episode has raised his profile so there will be a giant list of universities/govt agencies/NGOs that will hire him. Maybe not in the US, but the world is a big place.
And in 3 years if/when a Democrat gets elected back into office, he will probably be invited back to work/teach at the US elite university of his choice with open arms if he is inclined.
I dont really know this person or what his plan is; but if his plan was to be a high profile public advocate for the Palestinian cause; I dont see this as "destroying" anything. Most of the free world, Islamic world, and even half the US is on his side in all of this. On a global stage, the Trump regime and their supporters are very much the minority, and will probably be out of power in 3 years.
