I have been reading some on the history of Jerusalem as Al-Aksa. Actually very interesting.
By all accounts Al-Aksa/Jerusalem was not part of Islam mythology at all for several decades after the Koran was written, well after the death of Muhammad. Then in the end of the 7th century the Umayyad caliph Abd al-Malik, whose empire did not comprise Mecca or Medina, but did comprise the Levant, wanted their to be a comparable holy site under his control. So why not Jerusalem, which was already regarded as a Holy Site by the other two monotheistic religions?
So he basically invented the mythology of Al-Aksa/Jerusalem, built the Dome of the Rock, and ordered the Koran to be "reinterpreted" so that Al-Aksa/Jerusalem would be accepted as the physical location where Muhammad allegedly rode to heaven on a mythical creature. And this re-interpretation of Jerusalem being the physical place where Muhammad achieved this miracle, and hence made it a very holy place, eventually became the accepted view.
Also interesting, is that through most of Islamic history Jerusalem has not been particularly significant at the economic, cultural or spiritual level. The only times it was ever really regarded with significance is when it was taken, first during the Crusades and then by Israel in modern times. In fact during Ottoman times, Jerusalem (and really Islam itself) was put on the back burner, and everyone (Jews, Christians, Muslims) lived there for hundreds of years in relative peace.
Basically like when a little kid couldn't care less about a toy until another kid takes it, and then it becomes the most important thing in the world. And like any child throwing a tantrum, the Ummah couldn't care less that this particular "toy" belonged to the other child long before they were born. It is mine, mine, mine; the most important thing in the world, and I have to have it now, now, now.

They arrested him, transported him hundreds of miles down to the South, for some serious length of time didn't tell his pregnant wife or lawyer where he's being held, thrown in a cage, and is likely going to be deported and miss the birth of his child.

I have never read a good explanation what exactly he was doing at Columbia other than anti-Israel activism (maybe that is pretty much what he was doing?), but I dont think he was taking a Calculus final and then going to the frat kegger down the street.

Given what happened, I would say the levels of Islamophobia following 9/11 was remarkably low. The most wild thing about your completely disconnected worldview, is that the modern Western World is literally the most tolerant society that has ever existed, and the overall treatment the Islamic community got in the US following 9/11 was pretty much a best case scenario. Certainly more tolerant than any other society today (except maybe Japan, which is basically the Western world anyways); and yet in your distorted worldview it is some unique evil.
