Like I said... controlling the race from the front.

Max never intended to make that corner.

RedBull has had the best strategy team for years now so when they decide that clean air until the first pitstop is worth more than giving up the place I tend not to doubt them. Max was never going to get past Piastri if he gave the place back anyway as the McLaren is even better in clean air.

I doubt that's really the case. Strategy becomes a lot easier when you have a much faster car.

During the Hamilton / Rosberg era Mercedes could mess up the strategy as much as they liked because the car was 1 second lap faster than everyone else.

Unsportsmanlike move by Max and not the correct penalty imo

He should have been forced to return the lead to Oscar or suffer a severe penalty like a 5s stop&go.

Now he was able to choose clean air and actually had some win equity if Oscar had become stuck behind HAM, for example

If he returns the lead, I doubt he is ever coming close to that McLaren and has approx 0 win equity

Penalty should have been 10 seconds - imagine if Red bull had the quicker car that they could easily have made up that 5 seconds lead and stayed in front after the pit stop. It totally disrupts Oscar's race having to sit behind a car that he is not quick enough to pass down the straight and potentially compromise his race with having warmer tyres, brakes and engine from being behind. FIA need to learn for the future for that one as Max will just keeping doing it if all he gets is a 5 second slap on the wrist.

The penalty or lack thereof, is just another example of how F1 has a tendency to favor the most popular drivers / teams. If someone on Sauber had done this, they would have gotten the normal penalty.

It appears 5s is the normal penalty for lap 1 and 10s after that.

In any case, still not correct.

The stewards should be on the team radio less than 30s after the incident and tell RB to give back the place to restore what is good and fair OR ELSE

Stewards taking an eon to decide on even trivially easy calls is a time honored tradition.

I read something about the rules having changed such that stewards don't tell a team to give the place back any more. The team has to make the decision whether or not to by themselves and risk the penalty if they choose not to.

There's definitely a problem in cases like this though, as the penalty is less than the time gained by being in clean air before it has to be served making it a complete freeroll to cut the corner and not give the place back.

it's always been this way... give it back OR!

There was definitely a time where the stewards would tell the team that they had to give the place back or get a penalty. As I understand it now the stewards don't do that any more, they just give a penalty (or not) if the place isn't given back without the step of telling the team to give it back.

It was never the stewards that told the teams to swap places. It was the race director and they stopped that after 2021 for obvious reasons. All teams hear now is that the incident was noted and forwarded to the stewards and they need to decide themselves to give the place back or risk a penalty.

The 2021 times were you had teams openly negotiating with the race director live on radio as if it was a hostage crisis will never be defeated

the truth can not be hidden...

HAM obviously had to catch up with Charles about learning the specifics of the car. Charles has a huge advantage. Still I think that HAM has dropped off considerably. The only driver he has been beating consistently the last 5-10 years has been Bottas. Last year Russell beat Lewis 19-5 in qualifying.

old guys rule... they just can no longer compete.

it's not unique to Lulu... the issue is... the fast twitch muscles, the eyesight, the brains reaction time and even conditioning all degrade imperceptibly... but they degrade.

the brain still remembers how to win, and the motivation to win still remains, but the competition has a distinct advantage due to age.

Desire to win drives these antiques, it's sad to watch. I would say that even if Lewis has another outlier win at some point, it will be fleeting and mark the end.

what makes me upset is that he is being paid a massive salary out of character for the grid... surely it is Ferrari's money, but I think it sets a poor precedent.

Mercedes on fire...

Hamilton still being on the grid and being paid a massive salary because of his marketing value is not really an issue to me. Doing so by replacing Sainz does annoy me as I don't think Sainz deserved that.

but if you're going to have a second driver, you may as well have one who brings more eyeballs to the team and brand. I'd be certain that it makes the owners and sponsors happier to have him.

For marketing and merchandise sold you are probably right

and that's why F1 has jumped the shark...
