President Donald Trump
I assume it's still acceptable to have a Trump thread in a Politics forum?
So this is an obvious lie - basically aimed at
Why would quote something positive from someone who had some really bad qualities? Whether you realise it or not, naming who you're quoting implies that the quote has merit simply because Ghandi said so.
We celebrated our 25th anniversary just three weeks ago.
This is the same myopic attitude that has people wanting to tear down statues to Thomas Jefferson because he owned slaves.
Focusing on Trump's cognitive decline seems misplaced. Has he declined? I'm sure he has. Almost everyone his age has. But cognitive decline is about #400 on a ranked list of reasons why Trump should not be president. Trump has always been profoundly unfit for the presidency. As I've said before, if Trump had been elected in 1992, he would have been almost this bad. Maybe
Ok but given Biden before, Trump maybe now (or 1-2 years from ), it can happen again well after Trump is out of the picture.
There should be a non political mechanism to discharge mentally incapacitated people from their offices. That includes judges of course as well as senators and the like.
It's a terribly complicated thing to get right but doing absolutely nothing , i think, will make the problem worse, as we are approaching a "gerontocracy" really fast, over80 judges making significant decisions will be more common, senators being key votes over 80 as well and so on.
Dems: we can move the guy we just accused of doing Nazi salutes to the left
"Some" could be 2. But it shouldn't be surprising that "some" in the Democratic party are desperate as ****
they wouldnt be so desperate if they had a shred of principle. instead they try to be Republicans.
Nobody has ever claimed that every single Democrat is good. I'm sure most would say that most politicians suck in general
On a point by point basis Dems are overall better for society. I know you don't personally believe that, but to me its incredibly evident
So I don't mind at all that you are calling some Dems unprincipled or trying to steal the republican playbook

No it isn't. It's someone giving a quote in a lofty manner and then someone else pointing out that the person quoted wasn't big on black peeps and liked to sleep naked next to kids.
Take the current president. Hes a d-bag. One could wonder why tf he was voted into office again. One could ask just wtf they were thinking when casting the ballot. But one wouldn't say for example "Hey, as Adolf Hitler said, "What luck for the rulers that men don't think"! I mean I know the bloke engaged in genocide and was a hate filed monster, but let's just disregard that and take my quote at face value!"
So no it isn't myopic. If people don't wish to be called on their quotes then don't quote racist quasi kiddie fiddlers.
Does this rule apply to the hard sciences as well?
Are we supposed to avoid saying that Werner von Braun made significant contributions to space travel because he built rockets for the Nazis?
Depends which thing you prioritise in terms of significance re character. Which do you think is more pertinent wrt Herr Braun? Also you left out the bit where he built rockets for the Nazis with slave labour. Which for me anyway outweighs any good stuff he did for the USofA.
Same principle applies to Mahatma. Did he say some warm n fuzzy stuff? Sure. Did he hate blacks and was he sexually attracted to 13 year old kids to the point where he slept naked with them to test temptation? Abso-goddam-lutely.
So again really depends on the overall weighing up, doesn't it?
I mean, you guys aren't wrong that Ghandi was problematic but you are both off the reservation by implying that CN admires pedophilia or whatever it is you are doing

This is like the closest the Trump nut-huggers are ever going to get to being clever, let 'em have a little victory lap over this gotcha.

Eh?
I certainly never implied that and I'm genuinely bemused at your take here. It was more of a picked the wrong person to quote kinda deal. That's all so you can relax, now that that's been clarified.

The myopic part is that Gandhi is a huge anticolonial figure, despite his issues, including anticolonialisn in South Africa. There’s a reason he’s being quoted and it’s not his racism or sexism. This post proves that you are being myopic, comparing him to Trump and Hitler. The context of his life is clearly way different.
By the way Foucault was probably a PoS too but also one of the most quoted sociologists for the 20th century.
