Hmmm - no bourbon thread?

my body really isn't recovering as well as it used to after scotch, so I've started dipping my toe into Bourbon waters.

I've got a 13th cask sitting a few feet from me but still haven't cracked it or tried it.

I did get to try the 2024 Double Oak and while it was good, it was nowhere near secondary (600+) good

I hear ya there... at 400-500 a bottle, a LOT of options open up.

Couple of nice pickups today

Oh my... how much for that star hill? I want one but I have not seen them in LV.

I am looking for an old fitz bib 13 vvs red label...

Those are a couple great pick ups

He had it listed at 160 but got me for 125. MSRP is 100 so not too bad. I've heard good things and will likely crack it soon with a buddy who is super into wheaters. Might just sell the Old Fitz as the profit would more than pay for the Star Hill

Buff Trace released Eagle Rare 12 on Fathers day...
yikes

a nip and a giggle...

after being initially underwhelmed on first corking, the OF7 has opened up a bit and tastes much better today.

ps... I have two weller 107's and two Russell single barrels for sale. looks like all four will sell.

Hey, sounds like you’re on the right track with bourbon for smoother mornings! Since you like Woodford Reserve and Buffalo Trace, you might want to check out Elijah Craig Small Batch β€” it’s solid, flavorful, and usually around the same price. Also, Four Roses Single Barrel is worth a try if you want something a bit more complex but still easy to drink. If you want to experiment a bit, try Maker’s Mark; it’s a bit softer and sweeter, which some people love.

I dont think I have time for the whole four roses thing with all their 'formulas/recipes', but I do understand that folks love that brand.

I walked into a local store looking for Parkers and they had these two in the allocation case...

The owner wanted 1000$ each... I politely refuse.
I did manage to score a Parkers batch14 online though... should be here in a week.

I am also seriously thinking about getting another Calumet 18 while they are still somewhat available on the shelves, and below msrp

I'm considering picking up a Calumet 18 as well. 499 is rough though

Keep an eye out at your local Costco because they have been randomly showing up at a few locations for about 420 and change. Last auction results show two, one went for 610 and the other went for 710.

Around here there are a a number sitting in cases at 460 even though msrp is 499. A couple of those shops ship if your interested.

I went in to a local store today to pick up a something and I had the opportunity to test this bottle. I was blown away by this Rye store pick today... it has an AMAZING nose and the palate was so silky smooth.

Best 60 bucks I've spent in a LONG time.

I needed a back up...

A local bar was giving out a full 2oz pour of Jack Daniels 14 today for 25 bucks... I don't want to open mine yet, so I went for a taste.
This was from a BRAND NEW bottle, so it was a neck pour... but I wasn't completely blown away. I let it sit for about 5 minutes before nosing... I probably should have waited longer.
It was deep, thick and complex... but it smelled like a more mature and smoother JD.
I'm not really sure what I expected, but I do know I expected more... much more.

The store pick rye I got above blew it away on first blush.

I got another Parkers locally this morning... along with a Barrel Select Stagg

Goin to Louisville for work at the end of the month. Anybody happen to have any recs on best tours/tastings to hit up?

Won’t have a car so near downtown is preferable, but could venture further if worthwhile.

There are probably 20 good distilleries along or near Main street in Downtown Louisville. Michters, Old Forester, and Bardstown are probably the most famous but Whiskey Thief is touted as the best experience (Last I had looked they weren't doing tours though).

Was supposed to get in around noon and had tours for Angels Envy and Bardstown booked. Ended up not getting until midnight, sad.

Only had a couple of hours the next day after work stuff was over. The Main Street area in general is really nice, can walk along the river, lots of restaurants, museums, all the distilleries. Then you go one block down and it’s like deserted and full of vacant lots.

Anyways, did a walk in at Old Forester:

Got their premium flight, which was a 117 single, 2024 birthday bourbon, and something called Presidents Choice I’d never seen before. First time trying the birthday bourbon - not super impressed. Very oaky and woody. The President’s Choice bottle was amazing tho, sweet finish, kinda cinnamony.

Then walked over to Green River:

They had a limited release flight for $16. Good value, for four pours, all 110+ proof that I hadn’t seen in stores. There’s an army collaboration one they did for the 250th anniversary of the army that was very unique, floral and fruity, kind of like a wine aroma. Highly recommend.

Thanks for the TR. I think I need to spend a day or two in Louisville sometime.

Worth it if you’re a whiskey nut.

Easy to visit too. Airport is 10 minutes to downtown with no traffic, plenty of hotels within walking distance of the big attractions, the school and fairgrounds are also like 5 minutes away if you want to see those.

I would have gone to the baseball bat museum for sure if I’d had more time.
