2025 World Series of Poker May 27th - July 16th
She's got a sick read on women
I've rarely seen anyone run better than Okamoto has at this ladies event final table.
Okamoto just blasting away through the entire event 3 years in a row and generating fold after fold.
Presuming her opponent isn’t playing for a bonus million from ClubWPT, Shiina should get the win, again.
This back to back win is Johnny Chan-esque like.
Apparently Okamoto plays a couple tourneys weekly going back weeks at a time. I guess that keeps her game sharp.
3 days ago finished 5th at the Venetian for 15K, 6 days ago finished 11th at the Wynn for 6K, etc.
She cashed minimum in the Main last year. Everyone will be tracking her at the Main this year.
Really a mind-blowing accomplishment.
It’s unfortunate from a publicity perspective that it seems like she doesn’t really speak English and is from a country where poker is basically illegal.
Adam Friedman certainly qualifies here as he won the 2018, 2019, and 2021 $10,000 Dealer's Choice Championship (event not held in 2020 because of the COVID-19 pandemic).
But you're thinking of somebody else?
Is this who you're thinking of?
Thang Luu finished 2nd in the 2007 $2,000 Omaha Hi/Lo then won the $1,500 the next two years (he didn't cash in the 2007 $1,500 Omaha Hi/Lo).
Really a mind-blowing accomplishment.

It could still be great for growing the game internationally.
There have been a lot of exciting storylines this WSOP. Ivey's and the grinder's wins were big, Negraunu has come close and her win is also huge.
The woman who busted in 3rd did one of the worst punts I've ever seen. Majorly -ChipEV but considering how short the other woman was at the time was a massive ICM disaster. Something that would seem bad in 2004 let alone 2025. Happens about 30 min into the highlights.

My analysis on Twitter last night:

If she only speaks Japanese, and you canβt play poker in Japan, I donβt really see how this grows the game.
I donβt mean this as a criticism in any way. Sheβs really an amazing story with an incredible accomplishment; I just donβt see how it can be leveraged very well.
Its an interesting thing to think about because the play when Chan won in the 80's was probably very close to the same skill level I saw last night. Excluding Okamoto ofc.

Ya it was awful but she said her highest cash prior was 3k. Not everyone who plays these things pays the $200/month to get Johnathon Little to tell them how to play. Bad players making it deep should always be celebrated.

A superstar winning grows the game regardless. Lebron sells jerseys in Wyoming. Next time we should ask nicely for a white, blue eyed lady with huge knockers to get first.
I think the only thing that could happen at the WSOP these days that would have any sort of mainstream press appeal (other than collusion for a $1 million prize at a live streamed final table) is a woman winning the main event. Everything else is news for poker players.

John Bonetti did a pretty bad one three handed with AK v 66 on a K63 board at the ‘93 ME but that was the Pleistocene Era

Holy hell you werenβt joking. WTF
I have taken the sucker bet of picking 50 players to collectively beat 1.6x ROI in the Main Event. I know it's a -EV bet. I did it for the challenge and the sweat, at the price of an expensive Vegas dinner. As I have zero chance to play in the WSOP Main this year, I will instead root for my hand-picked team of crushers.
It was fun trying to decide which players to choose. I have pretty decent knowledge of the NLHE MTT scene. I tried to choose some elite level high roller crushers while also making room for some lesser known mid stakes options who tend to crush big and diverse NLHE fields. I think the latter type of player probably has a higher ROI in the Main than someone who plays Tritons, but I covered both bases. If any of these players makes the final table, I will treat them to a free loaded nachos at Flavortown next summer. If that isn't motivation, I don't know what would be.

Really good list. Deep cut with Colin Robinson! I made a final table with him last year. Good player and super nice guy.

Just watched it. I feel the 56cc would be a sweet 3! There to just take it down pre as you are never seeing a light 4! There and can just realize equity with a nice low variance 3!.
That does seem like a punt. Prolly playing that as a call on turn as you are crushed by flushes and any 8x. Raise calling that turn is just wow. Maybe make it like 3.2 or 3.5 and fold to the jam is right. Idk lock up 2nd place and then duke it out. Just letting someone with a short stack ladder up to 2nd there is icm suicide.
Amazing work heads up on the gladiators final table by Pelz. Sim had a 2.5:1 lead coming in and was just completely outplayed by Pelz.
