Giving gatekeepers the power to adjudicate who is a β€œreal” woman and reducing women athlete’s bodily autonomy to essentially having to prove they have a vagina does not protect women, it endangers them. A trans ban does not give women power; it gives power to men over them to check their sex organs. Your version of fairness is myopic and small and focuses on a few individuals o

How do you know it won't be wimmin' checking the secks organs? I'm sure that Riley Gaines chick would be down for it.

by Rococo m

I wasn't implying that you thought it was OK. I'm quite sure you don't.

Oh, I meant that rhetorically, sorry. I’m frustrated that I missed it obviously.

by Crossnerd m

Again, pointing to supply/demand without analyzing the market drivers that produce the demand is just a feedback loop that rests on its own false premise that male anthletes are inherently more profitable.

I could be wrong ofc, but I think if the NBA and the WNBA were exactly equally marketed, that the NBA would still substantially outperform the WNBA in the ratings.

by Luckbox Inc m

My understanding is that wnba finances are pretty opaque and we don't know if they're losing money or not.

So the WNBA is profitable, but the finances are "opaque" because that somehow helps the argument that WNBA players are underpaid.? What? If the league was profitable, the players union would be using real, concrete numbers showing how profitable the league is.

by Trolly McTrollson m

Oh, so there are other factors at play here besides "durrrrrr people just want to watch the best athletes"

yes you missed the second half of the sentence

Because fans want to watch the best people in the world competing at a sport.

and then to determine demand/viewership you can assess the sport.

Football attracts more viewers than bowling for example...it also attracts more viewers than flag football.

I completely agree with you that there are other factors.

I don't accept the "they are more watched just because they are better" narrative.

the finances may be opaque, but the uncertainty is about magnitude, not direction. it’s a question of whether the league loses something like $10m a year or $15m a year, not whether it’s profitable on its own. the wnba’s reliance on nba support and shared infrastructure isn’t really contested, even if the exact numbers aren’t public

by Crossnerd m

I understand this, you soft-skulled nitwit. Now go one step further and consider what profitability is based on, and you’ll see that it was addressed in my original post as historic underinvestment and chronic lack of media coverage and visibility.

It’s not because women athletes are worse. It’s because they are given less to work with, and it’s intentional.

Lower the rim so women can dunk

This is the same thing Rick did yesterday with his Jewish bowling team- pointing to token counterexamples as evidence of the issue being benign or exaggerated.

Across every disadvantaged group there are members who have internalized a dominant ideology. But individual belief does not negate structural power, and choice is not the same as freedom even if women like Riley Gaines thinks it is.

Honestly, I think you’re maybe just being playful here, C, but it was minimizing, hurtful, and badly done imo.

by Crossnerd m

Hold on, are you somehow under the impression that athletes themselves are the ones driving viewership?

That would explain a lot.

i guess if you want to think that the products are the same and it comes down to marketing/culture/etc then i don't see how you can ever expect to be taken seriously in any conversation revolving around sports

ie just to play slippery slope - you do realize this "every viewing experience is equal" wouldn't just apply to wnba vs nba but also wnba vs the jv women's basketball team

are these seats emptier than a wnba game because of a grand conspiracy as well?

not enough marketing budget for the churchland vs nansemond river game

I challenge your assumption that the arena was emptier than a WNBA game.

by housenuts m

except the pro bowl isn't actually a sport and no one tries. but you wouldn't know this of course.

someone needs to give him a gentle reminder that they canceled the pro bowl for this very reason - that nobody cared because the players didn't care nor try

it got replaced by whatever the f this is

lol

by Crossnerd m

No worries. I was just saying that I didn't need to wonder what you thought about it.

Racial connotations aside, the double standard for men and women (especially high profile men and women) when it comes to sexual agency is really bottom of the barrel thinking.

by Crossnerd m

I mean… you are wrong ofc

WAIT YOU DON'T ACUALLY BELIEVE THIS? geezerchess why are you such a wiener to let her get away with this

by MoViN.tArGeT m

WAIT YOU DON'T ACUALLY BELIEVE THIS?

Amazingly(?), I think she actually DOES believe it.

Again, you all seem to be laboring under the misconception that the athletes themselves are driving viewership, and kudos to the CMOs who tricked you into thinking that. It’s extremely effective.

Yeah and AAU has less people in the crowd than the NBA because of lack of marketing too

It’s amazing how as much as women complain about men not watching women’s sports, they also don’t watch women’s sports lol

men like basketball more. men want to watch men because they are men and think they are better at sports
If women like basketball more maybe women watch more but even then me not think so because women like men too

by Crossnerd m

the marketers have certainly tricked me into watching the NFL instead of high school football

what I've learned is the NFL (and other male sports) have amazing CMOs that can trick people into watching their sport, but there's no one in the world that is able to replicate that level of CMO for female sports.

by housenuts m

I just assumed you played a lot of highschool football yourself, which would explain the TBI

unironically I think the male dominated sport closest to reaching 50/50 in popularity was the ufc Rhonda Rousey had a hell of a run and they usually put a women's fight on most main cards. Not sure what that means. That sports more marketing for sure I think that is more inline with your thinking.

Women need to start watching sports with the same frequency as men, and they need to have a bias towards watching women sports... and I don't see that ever happening.
