President Donald Trump

I assume it's still acceptable to have a Trump thread in a Politics forum?

So this is an obvious lie - basically aimed at

Your example here would certainly be an unambiguously racist trope.

I assume you are implying that the actual depiction was not racist, or was only ambiguously racist, which is more than a little in tension with your subsequent claim that Trump was going for "maximum impact."

by Rococo

And you claimed that this depiction of black people as apes was a nothingburger despite the bolded, which is incomprehensible to me. Context matters. History matters.

I of course agree with you that context and history matters.

And in the Trump example, that context and history ALSO includes the fact that Trump himself was often portrayed as an orange monkey. (Probably even in this forum at some point.)

I agree I was too quick to call what Trump did a 'nothingburger.'

The 'maximum impact" includes the fact that depicting the Obama's as monkeys is a racist trope. But since Trump himself was portrayed as a monkey as far back as eight years ago makes that trope angle more problematic to use against him.

I prefer, "Just sayin'."

Eh, no?

"Herp derp, he was going for maximum impact by posting racist chit but it wasn't actually racist because people called him an orange baboon so they cancel each other out."

Yeah this is Olympian level mental gymnastics. Trump can not possibly be racist depicting black people as monkeys because he was once called a monkey. Well all right then.

Do Trump fans know they don't have to defend everything he does?

It is a fairly well known rule in the US that you can call anyone of any race a particular animal except you can't call black people monkeys. Trump should know this rule and if he does and still reposted this video then that action is on the same level of some of the racist stuff biden has said during his career.

I, of course, never said that Trump couldn't possibly be racist. He's horrible, so maybe being a racist is one of many of his horrible traits that we can add to the list.

I personally think it's wrong to depict anyone as monkey.

And Trump was depicted as an orange monkey far more than once.

No.

i do find it super annoying that everyone will talk about the video but not show it - i really hate the "we're going to talk about this thing in vague generalities of condemnation but you're not adult enough to see it for yourself"

The video is 3 seconds of this

Reminds me of a segment from Matt Walsh's documentary(?) Am I Racist?

Walsh goes into a bookstore asking for a copy of Dick Gregory's autobiography. But nobody is allowed to actually say the title of the book. (The title of the book is N*****.)

never look up on a rainy day.

Monkeys.

The line is hard and fast now. If you dont think trump is despicable you are an *******.

by geezerchess

Portraying folks one doesn't like as monkeys or donkeys pretty much is a nothingburger in my opinion. Was a common trope in the days of political cartoons in newspapers.

Jfc geezer just when I think you can't get any dumber or more pathetic, you surprise me yet again. You know damn well that black people were historically portrayed as apes by racists, so it isn't a nothing burger. Nobody cares about your opinion anyway.

This is a big fat "nope" for me. Does this logic extend to words? If Trump had been called some slur that referred to Hispanic people, would it then become problematic to criticize him for using the slur to refer to Hispanic people?

As an aside, after initially defending the video, Trump's people have now pulled it and are scapegoating some staffer. It must be wild to manage social media for Trump. You are encouraged to post crazy stuff, but when it backfires, you get blamed. What a job.

by geezerchess

I'm doing nothing more or less than pointing out that using monkeys as a symbol for folks you don't like (regardless of race or ethnicity) is not uncommon.

That said, Trump is a horrible person and of course knows that a monkey can be used specifically to mock black people. Trump looking for maximum impact, and he got what he wanted.

And its purpose is always to dehumanise them you gobshite. The Irish were depicted as apes too back in the day, and in the US, American WASPS have always dehumanised minorities with such imagery and it was always in a racist/bigoted manner. You really are an awful eejit, seriously. And why oh why am I so not surprised you watch the likes of Matt Walsh...

Why did racist Trump delete the video?

Didn't they say it was posted erroneously? How tf do you erroneously post something like that? Just blatant bullshit.

Probably wasn't expecting the backlash, tone deaf mfr that he is.

Guys, I can't emphasize enough how rushing in here to explain away Trump's use of unambiguously vile, racist imagery makes you look like cool dudes who didn't crawl out from under a gutter.
