The "LOLCANADA" thread...again

So what's new?

I've noticed the Liberals are now ahead in all major polls and Trudeau hasn't even started to campaign yet

Wow some of the highlights from the NDP convention were they picked a total nut case as their leader
Everyone announces their pronouns
Young folks in masks
Race cards
Misgendering the speaker who is non binary
Oh missed one Gender Equity Card

He's an anti-capitalist so sounds like most of this thread should be totally on board!

Heck if someone told me they had race cards and gender equality cards I'd call BS

Will see if he ever gets a seat

Heather McPherson was the wise choice

Well yes, any university could replace the huge amount of tuition dollars from international students by:1) Charge domestic students more tuition2) Try to get more deficit financing from provincial governments who have spent the last decades reducing in real terms transfers3) Cuts to programs and servicesI'm not sure why any of those is a good thing. Like sure, it could do that

Alright then.

by uke_master

Well you initially had a more draconian suggestion, then you slightly relaxed it to this idea where immigrants come and can't work during or after their degree, have to leave right away. That relaxation in your position is just about as bad as the former one. We're still in the situation where but for immigration we would have steep population decline, and perhaps the best sour

Nope. Exact same view as before. Deport millions whose visas are expiring/expired. Don't let international students work off-campus and diversify immigration. There's a few more things I'd like to see done but that's really the gist of it. In a perfect world we'd put a complete stop to immigration and let the country recover from the mess that's the Trudeau era, but those are pipe dreams.

But perhaps more importantly, making life as shitty as possible for international students is a terrible way to attract the "best and brightest" - they can't even work at timmies to earn enough money for basic food. They'll take those huge tuition dollars to other countries, and use their training to do high skill jobs in those other countries. I get it that you think this is fantastic. But it really isn't.

1. If you can't afford life here without working off-campus. Don't come.
2. Let them take those huge tuition dollars to other countries. Right now we're not benefitting from the ''best and brightest'' anyways.
3. I don't think anything is fantastic, it's quite literally the opposite right now. The point is, we've been doing it your way for decades with nothing to show for it. Flooded the country with immigrants who are oh so good for our economy and look at us now. Useless country. Cheap labor and nothing else.

by lozen

Maybe we cut waste and salaries . I was curious how much a professor at UBC makes and it's $200,000

That's exactly what it sounds like. Sounds like universities are just another institution who are piss poor with money.

LMAO this is just hilariously stupid. Maybe you can be mad at unions, but if you are lazy in your career you're destined for less raises and promotions and all the other things that incentivize people to make more money and enrich their lives. Yikes.

When did I say lazy people deserve raises and promotions?

Because of negative wage growth and cost of living it's almost impossible for majority of the country to work hard at their current job and enrich their lives. Housing prices used to be 3x the median family income now it's 7-10x. 120kish is the average medium family income right now in Canada, working hard and earning a promotion to get to 150k isn't much of a life upgrade, so instead employees ask for more PTO and hybrid work from home work weeks. Which is a big reason why American companies are more productive.

Sorry, I don't believe you. Working hard ABSOLUTELY can enrich your life. There is still huge diversity in economic success in the Canadian economy. You're not wrong that there are headwinds, but the story you are telling of no point to working hard may as well just ask for more PTO is false as some economy wide critique of Canada.

Lol nice vibe statistics. Sadly, no, 120k is quite off.

LMAO. I really love conservative vibe economics. You're right to latch on to productivity weakness, but no the explanation is not that Canadians do more work from home lmao.

Lol. When I first say the "trudeau era" it really didn't vibe with your anti-immigrant sentiments. But of course soon enough we get that the sentiment is decades long. Earlier in the discussion you tried to normalize your position (this was before all the India 2.0 and Indian fertility type comments) by suggesting it was something all the MPs were discussing. Except those discussion were NOT on the decades long policy of having international students come to our universities to get educated and later contribute to our economy. One can be made of the post covid Trudeau era increase over a couple years of international students (I have some partial overlap with these critiques although more nuanced), but you can only tangentially share the lane for a bit given your real view.

is his anti capitalist agenda above his pronouns? I do generally believe in capitalism as the best option its just flawed and needs to be heavy regulated because by design it aims for profit above all else not caring for humans. We used to call this center left but I guess im right wing now because all the lines go burrr. Canada has not really been that capitalist tho at least not for a long time so I don't get why we have to bend our holes over now.

northern Ontario where I live is the furthest thing from capitalist. Industries such as mining, milling, and forestry have historically fostered a strong union culture. Many communities are single-industry towns reliant on government support and investment to sustain. The region relies heavily on resource-based, heavily regulated industries. At my grandpas funeral I went around the room for fun and 12/13 of my aunts and uncles worked for the government. I was not raised around capitalists only the walmarts/timhortons feel capitalists. you know where all the Indians work

I think I've been very clear what my views are. You being incapable of having 2 conversations at once is a you thing.

One thing is clear, you're not coming at this from a Canada first view. You're worried your school will run out of money.

I had watched more highlights of the conference and it sure show you have a lot of folks that require some sort of Mental Health Care .

I never realized the guy elected leader has run federally and lost 2 times I believe and finished third both times in Vancouver of all places . How Heather Mcpherson wasn't elected baffles me as she has a seat and of all places in Alberta
The Alberta and Sask NDP do not support the choice .
The happiest two people on this selection have to be Carney and Polliviere

You would think he's going to be able to sue? AC is a private company, who cares if their CEO is bilingual.

I'd guess he was asked to leave, offered a generous package, and is 'stepping down', rather than booted out the door.

This last week has shown you how fxxked up Canada has become. I saw some feeds that a liberal bill makes it a crime to quote the bible and religious texts in regards to LGQBT2S+

Pretty smart retirement plan from him. Just send a message in your native language and retire with probably an 8 figure compensation package.

I think I've been very clear what my views are.

Agreed:
We should all care because apparently the solution to all of this is to turn Canada into India 2.0. It’s already happening where I’m from. You walk around the GTA you’d think you were in Mumbai and unlike us Canadians, the Indians will breed like crazy.
This is why it is a bit silly to try to act like you are just in alignment with a recent critique (only partially correct) that Trudeau oversaw too high a growth in international students in the last few years. You have a much deeper critique against immigration broadly over the decades.

by Pablito

One thing is clear, you're not coming at this from a Canada first view. You're worried your school will run out of money.

Lol. Of course, my arguments thus far presented in the thread have entirely focused on the benefits to the Canadian economy and to Canadian domestic students. You can make up that I'm arguing something else, but I'm trying to avoid the sharp economic catastrophe that would happen under your policy prescription. Canada first. For me personally, I have tenure at a stable research university in a core STEM subject. It is among the most secure jobs for life in the entire country. I have zero personal worries about being fired even if every international student was banned in perpetuity. Because I wouldn't be the student paying the increasing tuition or increased deficit financing, or having my programs and opportunities cut. So no, your attempt to guess something personal about me is a miserable failure. Although at this point in your arguments, I guess it was worth a try.

I actually don't hate that the NDP elected Avi Lewis. The NDP basically has two paths. In one, they try what they have tried for a long time, which is to be a "one step to the left of the Liberals" big tent type of party. But the truth is I don't think that party has much of a true soul, and often in internal tension between true beliefs and this attempt to put on a face of an approrpriate ready to be the next government type party. That was Heather McPherson.

In contrast Avi Lewis isn't ever going to be PM or close to it. But he DOES represent much closer the true core constituency of the NDP. It's a real home for that group of people. Neither you nor I are going to vote for them, but there is a certain authenticity to it that I think deserves to be part of the political conversation.

by MoViN.tArGeT

oh we tip like 20%

Thanks.

Why don’t Canadians tip when they are in the US?

by Pablito

But sure buddy, we can pretend the last 5 years didn't happen.

by Pablito

bring in 4 million immigrants over 4 years, who also get pathways to PR, as if that wouldn't add to our already ****ed up affordability crisis creating this never ending loop.

by Pablito

He’s denying reality. He’s denying the very thing MPs from all parties have been debating for months now. No one denies this anymore but apparently Uke. Not surprised.

by Pablito

Again, you think it’s skin colour. It’s not. It’s importing a culture that doesn’t mesh with ours and it’s importing far too many far too quickly.

by Pablito

Not the hot garbage we had the last 5 years.

I realize this is what may have confused you. I apologize for giving you credit for thinking you could have 2 conversations at once. I won't do that again.

I'm also not pretending to be in alignment with any ''recent'' critique. I want far stricter immigration rules than the MPs are suggesting BUT they are finally admitting to having made many mistakes and are looking for solutions. If it was up to me ZERO new people enter the country and millions will be deported. Not 1 international student will work off-campus. Canada will be given time to recover from the damage Trudeau has done.

Right right, as opposed to the flourishing economy we currently live in.

Because I wouldn't be the student paying the increasing tuition or increased deficit financing, or having my programs and opportunities cut.

Any uni who can't pay its bills using the enormous amount of tuition they charge domestic students, should close its doors.

The NDP is down to 6 seats with the floor crossing and the Quebec guy is leaving as well so that puts them at 5 . Sadly I do not see them relevant going in this direction.

Jack Layton came close.

Im not sure if Eby can even support this choice as BC is heavily invested in LNG

I think it’s because they are cheap or rudely ignorant of US tipping customs. It may be a regional thing. I know if they say they are from Toronto or Calgary there will be no tip. I’d say maybe 15% of Canadians tip in the US. It’s widely known that they are not good tippers.

I dont even know where that comes from. I would wager Canadians tip too much to a fault probably more then americans. It might have something to do with your country starting a trade war tho and trying to annex us. just a theory. its not because canadains don't tip its probably because they are mad at your country. When a good portion of the country is boycotting america its not super strange the ones who do go don't tip when visiting

by Pablito

I realize this is what may have confused you. I apologize for giving you credit for thinking you could have 2 conversations at once. I won't do that again.

Didn't you just verify precisely what I said? Namely, that despite you often posting acting as if your critique is about the last few years, you actually believe that the decades long immigration policy hasn't shown anything positive? Like we can share some partial agreement on critiques of the last few years, but I think we definitely disagree on the decades long "my way" of doing things.

If it was up to me ZERO new people enter the country and millions will be deported. Not 1 international student will work off-campus.

It is hard to imagine a better way to crater the Canadian economy than this. Looks like I am the "Canada first" guy.

Any uni who can't pay its bills using the enormous amount of tuition they charge domestic students, should close its doors.

Ok. While a large number of smaller colleges would likely or at least be dramatically downsized, most universities would continue. They would just be crippled. Top tier researchers going to the US or Europe. Bigger class sizes, less opportunities, higher tuitions, etc etc. It would be a good way to crater Canada's higher education as well. Can it be done? Sure. THey will survive. Some will be ok. But giving up a huge amount of foreign money that helps makes things cheaper and better for domestic students is shooting oneself in the foot.

Instead, I suggest we put Canada first.
