Climate Change - increasingly horrible disasters loom
...............
there is so much out there about this - I don't really need to provide a lot of sources - a quick google
The larger forces in the example are two-fold.
1) The dwindling supply of metabolic inputs
2) The increasing presence of toxic metabolic output
At the end, the bacteria are simultaneously starving and choking on their own toxic waste.
Humans are creating a quasi-lifeform which is digital in nature and competing for our most essential metabolic input .... water. The humans who want to harness that digital supremacy for their short-term personal power don't seem to give a damn about the long-term consequences.
The lust for short-term personal power is an innate trait which is leading to an evolutionary bottleneck for the species. It's a trait which may make human adaptation impossible.
I think it's important to try and anticipate the developments which will accompany collapse. It's a gradual process which is accelerating. Not a sudden impact like a meteor or a supervolcano eruption.
I'll begin with a mod to humility and say that it's impossible to predict with precision. I don't have a 20/20 crystal ball into the future.
With that in mind .... here are the things which are blinking red.
1) Fresh water shortages
These are emerging around the world. The US as a whole is in a pretty significant drought which is most acute in the Colorado River Basin. That region is dependent upon winter snowpack which doesn't happen when it's too warm to snow. Lake Mead and Lake Powell are trending in the direction of dead pool.
2) Inflation
More people on a planet with finite resources living in a society which demands growth. Inflation is expected and it's getting worse.
3)Sea Level Rise & Coastal Inundation / Erosion
This is a highly nuanced topic which deserves its own thread.
Sea levels are simultaneously a global and regional issue. They don't rise equally in different places and the regional disparities are rather dramatic.
The global rise is due to melting land based ice and thermal expansion. Sea level rise is accelerating. Doubling in the last two decades and poised to accelerate further as ice shelves like those in front of Thwaites Glacier collapse and reduce the resistance to outflow.
Regional rise is dependent upon a variety of factors. Ocean currents, land subsidence, gravitational forces.
Beyond sea level rise, there are tides whose amplitudes are governed by an 18.6 year lunar cycle. Around 2034, the high tide amplitude will be maxed out a few inches higher than the norm and 6 inches higher than present.
Doesn't seem too bad until you superimpose a cat 5 storm surge on top of the elevated ocean.
4) Rain Bombs
These are events such as accompanied Hurricanes Harvey, Florence & Helene. Storms that drop >1 meter of rain and flood everything in their path and spread the toxic contents on the surface like the pig farm excrement in N. Carolina.
The worst rain bomb would be something they refer to in California disaster planning as an ARk storm which stands for Atmospheric River storm. These occurred before climate change with the most recent biblical CA rain event occurring in 1861-2 so they aren't solely attributable to climate change. But they are made more likely and more powerful by climate change and more likely to occur during an El Nino when the jet stream is pushed further south. These are trains of atmospheric rivers that just dump for weeks on end. Would be the worst natural disaster in US history if the 1861 event were simply repeated given all of the infrastructure which now exists.
5) Uninsurable Real Estate ==> Banking Crisis
Wildfire and storm damage is growing faster than the economy. Regions are transition toward economic infeasibility. When uninsured property owners get wiped out, the property will be abandoned and people will attempt to migrate into areas where the natives don't want them. A nice recipe for governing instability.
The biggest concentration of vulnerable mortgages are guaranteed by Freddie Mac and Fannie Mae. But at some point, the ability to obtain mortgages in many locations is wiped out because no one can underwrite the risk. What happens to banks balance sheets when too much real estate becomes uninsurable? Think 2008 but on a larger scale.
6) Heatwaves
Don't need to spend a lot of time with this. But things reach a different category when we start exceeding wet bulb thresholds. It's estimated that an excess deaths in the recent European heat wave exceeded 20,000.
Within a decade, events may impact millions at a time.
7) Crop Failures
Crops needs an acceptable range of light, temperature and moisture. Too much or too little of any of those variables screws up the harvest. Climate change is amplifying the range of those variables, making it more likely that they fall outside of the acceptable range.
Fertilizer shortages such as those resulting from conflict with Iran don't help matters.
8) Geoengineering
We're almost certain going to attempt SRM or Solar Radiation Management. We're going to try to manage the temperature by blocking sunlight.
9) Ocean ecosystem collapse
Blocking sunlight doesn't stop the ocean from absorbing the CO2 from our emissions, leading to a pretty dramatic acidification which is well under way. Coral reef systems are going to get hammered by this El Nino.
10) Plastic Poisoning
The amount of plastic in our bodies has doubled over the past decade and is climbing rapidly.
11) Infertility
Male testosterone levels have nearly halved over the last 50 years. Too much environmental toxin. And who wants to raise kids in a darkening world?
That's enough for now.
moved it to your blog
It's not all that complicated. 1) Ban unnecessary and polluting consumption via global treaty. 2) Provide UBI for all necessities (food, shelter, medical and dental care, education, basic technology (internet/phone/computer) childcare, community resources)3) Offer employment in fields relating to providing necessities and in environmental restoration. It's a fundamentally diffe
As for number #1 would that include all private air travel?
#2 will do nothing for climate change its global welfare
Green pushing leaders have promised so many green jobs that pay well already

Nearly all private air travel would be banned until we can build electric planes which are not currently on the horizon. Travel on trains and ships are much lower emission alternatives.
UBI would be the most important policy to fight climate change. Nearly all industry is heavily polluting. Much current employment would disappear. People need to be fed, housed and provided medical care.
I don't think the "welfare" of the citizens is a dirty word. I have no shame in advocating for citizen welfare. The US Constitution basically orders the Congress to provide for the general welfare (Article 1, Section 8, Clause 1). The welfare of the people and society is literally the whole point of government in my eyes.
How would you distill the purpose of government lozen? Torturing little girls for kicks?
What do I expect? Asking a sadist his opinion on citizen welfare.
I suppose we could create communities where people volunteer to live in a sadomasochistic environment. Some people require that for their libido to kick in. But no children would be permitted to live there. There needs to a minimum age of consent.

Were does all the money come from to pay for all these citizen welfare items. If no employment no companies or tax base ?

All the world leaders will be benevolent and make sure all people are properly cared for. These technical questions of yours just prove you're a sadist. Just shut up and be obedient and all will be well.

Money is a relatively recent invention. It's existed for only the last 2% of the history of the human species. The last 1/1,000,000th of Earth's history.
Why do we need money?
Photosynthesis doesn't require money, it requires CO2, sunlight and water.
Humans don't need money. They need oxygen, water and the food supply which is dependent upon photosynthesis as well as moderate temperature and rainfall.
Moderate temperature and rainfall is dependent upon moderate levels of heat trapping gases in the atmosphere.
These are the things we need. Money isn't on the least of things we need.
When my children were toddlers, I didn't require that they come up with cash to pay for their room and board. If we treat everyone like family which shouldn't be too difficult when you recognize that we all have common ancestry .... then money becomes irrelevant.
As much as it pains me to acknowledge, you and I belong to the same family lozen.
So I'm bound to try and make sure that you're taken care of as well as long as you don't insist on enjoying the suffering of children like Greta.
There will be rules that protect young people from sadists. That's grounds for excommunication from the family. A ticket to living on a colony with fellow sadists.

Your dumping on Lozen over and over is kinda creepy, man.
It's rather fascinating how people are unable to look at things in larger time scales despite the abundance of available historical evidence.
They are unable to envision the world they don't experience personally.
Money has always been a fundamental element of life in their personal experience and they can't imagine that it becomes obsolete.
There are "larger forces". A Yellowstone eruption ends money. An AMOC collapse ends money.
Money emerged when atmospheric CO2 was ~ 280ppm and methane was 0.7ppb. Now they are 430ppm and 1.9ppb and trending steadily higher. That's a completely different version of the planet. And it's not congruent with money.
Money is not the largest force. Food, water and shelter are larger forces.
I try to speak to people in the language they understand.
His creepy dumping on children like Greta is the reason I'm dumping on him. That's his karma.
I'm sorry that you don't find his acknowledgement that he gets his kicks from her suffering to be creepy. Care to comment on why that doesn't register with you?

Plenty of people understand these things. You're just upset that no one wants to listen to your endless, stoned lectures about them.
This whole thread is supposed to be "creepy" in both a literal and figurative sense.
The idea that we're headed for a Holocaust on steroids is intended to creep people out. To wake people up from the zombie stupor that has us marching in that direction.
Like a creeping vine, the message is meant to be invasive and take root.
Nature has a creepy side to it which is brutal and vicious. That's the real world.
My creepiness is just words. That's nothing compared to the creepiness that emerges when we run short of food and water. The game of survival musical chairs when there isn't enough to go around is apex creepiness.

I'm upset that no one has a better alternative than me for addressing those things. I'm upset that no one else is willing to do what is necessary.
I confess .... I'm emotionally attached to the continuity of human civilization. I'm a romantic who imagines a better world.
The fire inside me burns at high intensity. Just the luck of the draw. I certainly didn't ask for it.

I'm kinda surprised you believe in karma.
I don't recall Lozen saying he gets his kicks watching Greta suffer. Quite the contrary, I get the impression that Lozen would prefer not to look or think about her at all.
I have suffered with mental illness for my whole life, so in some ways I certainly have empathy for her. But when you choose (like she did) to be a public advocate for anything, and you come across as angry and start lecturing the world on how it needs to follow her agenda, then there's going to be harsh responses. It's part and parcel of being a public figure.

THIS!!!
NutNut acts like we disagree with him that the world is facing a serious climate crisis. I think only ONE poster (pokerfooty) has claimed that there is no climate crisis.

Greta is no different than Katie Perry or Justin Trudeau that lecture us on climate change yet seem to have no regard on their personal lives . Take Perry big climate activist yet for fun she launched into space. The amount of carbon that took is unbelievable .
Also how is Great suffering other than the mental anguish of climate change that yes I think will effect her later in life. And yes the innocent children dying in Gaza yet not a word on all the children working 16 hours a day with a hammer to mine the minerals needed for Lithium Batteries and our cell phones

Much (if not all) of Greta's anger and depression was a result of mental illness. Climate was the catalyst. And she took a brave step that many do not take by channeling her anger and frustration into working for a cause greater than herself.
That said, I find angry scolds like her annoying because they often generate more heat than light (to borrow an appropriate metaphor).
Nothing more annoying than a loud woman, amirite fellas?

Greta walks the talk. She traveled to and from UN meetings in NYC on a wind powered sailboat.
Justin Trudeau said this ....
