Independents are almost never happy and this has been going on for a while (they slightly prefer a republican white house but not by much).
Very partisan people are extremely unhappy when their enemies are in the white house, and often fairly happy when their own guys are in the white house.
Republicans love their own leaders more than democrats love their own leaders (fairly uncontroversial claim i suppose, but the data confirms it).
And this has been going on for 20+ years, it's not a Trump phenomenon, it started with the end of Bush jr I term

“Opposing political views” is a rather broad category that can range from “local tax policy” to “certain people don’t deserve rights.”
Seems like a plausible conclusion to me.

The US is mainly divided between the two main parties, so "opposing political views" to a Dem would mean a Trumper or Trump-adjacent ie a supporter of fascism. It's not surprising that a larger number of these people are so toxic that they repel family members.
This is where Republicans have really dug in their heels and their true pervasive resentment and retaliation inspiring bitterness comes from
They have sons and daughters and nieces and nephews who have cut them out of their lives because the family members can't take the endless whining about nonsense that doesn't ****ing matter that just makes the whiner look like a horrible hateful person
And instead of having self reflection they attribute it to the woke boogeyman instead of internalizing that their hate filled bigotry is the reason that their family doesn't want to be around them
