You seemed to be of the naive opinion (aka Russian propaganda) that western leaders didn’t regularly call for peace and you can’t be mad if such a call for peace had been posted ITT by Trudeau a few posts backed and you missed it. Go to the most recent UN resolution if you want a more formal call for peace than twitter. Everyone - EVERYONE - among western leaders wants peace.

Perhaps your massive confusion about wanting peace is because you’re confused about sending weapons, as if sending weapons is antithetical to peace. But they are not. It is a basic recognition that if Ukrainian lines crumble starved for ammunition, then Putin doesn’t benevolently cease fire, he instead will push to take more of the country. Unless you view “peace” as “total capitulation of Ukraine” of course.

I don't know, ask Putin. When you have a horrible tyrant invading a country like Ukraine with little care to the death and destruction of his own people, it isn't easy to magically achieve peace. Achieving capitulation is easy. Peace is not. Especially when Putin has shown no indication of wanting peace in 3 years. And there is absolutely room for very reasonable debate about what the best strategy to dealing with Putin is, but what is not reasonable is your kremlin talking points where you pretend the western leaders don't want peace when obviously - obviously - OBVIOUSLY - they do.

The basic dynamic of the last few years is that IF Ukrainian lines break, then Putin will just take more and more of Ukraine until he has it all, and a realistic path to peace is just not present. This whole narrative they could just call him up on the phone and get a lasting peace deal.....where? When? I don't see it. I think Trump has acted shamefully and harmfully - but despite this I still hope his unorthodoxy somehow finds a path to a peace that is just and is lasting.

I think what you mean is that no other leader have done a shameful public dressing down of Zelensky. I don't really know what "this has to end" even means, like everyone wants the war to end (except for Putin) and the war would end (if Putin did it) and maybe maybe maybe Trump will find some way to convince Putin to have a lasting peace, but that isn't something that is just magically in the power of Zelensky's hands UNLESS you mean full capitulation. While Europe has spent more than the US on Ukraine, having the US abandon Ukraine is basically saying to Putin that it is totally ok if they invade European countries there will be no meaningful consequences of that from the US. I don't see how that is helpful for peace in Ukraine OR world peace more generally.

If Putin had suddenly had a change of heart and instead of devastating Ukraine's cities, civilians, and military day in and day out for 3 years was really wanting to sue for peace, there are ways to communicate that. The suggestion that the war continued not because Putin wants it to continue but because western leaders weren't casually chatting with him on the phone is hilariously bad.
As for the latter part, the question is perhaps what "winning" means. For years it has been clear that IF Ukrainian lines falter, then Putin will advance and take more. And incrediable Ukrainian courage fighting with one arm tied behind their back they managed to throw off the initial assault on Kiev, they liberated huge swaths in Kharkiv Oblast, they threw out the invaders from Kherson Oblast. Progress happened, because of western weaponry. There was even glimmers of hope in summer of 2023 with the "summer offensive" that Ukraine would be able to punch through in the east. It didn't happen. Now we've been in something of a strategic stalemate for over a year now. Everyone wants it to end....but how? Realistically how? I'm holding out all hope that Trump's unorthodox position that seems to be undermining Ukraine and bolstering Russia will somehow accomplish the opposite. But I'm very nervous.

Montreal's point is actually a decent one. For a tiny fraction of the US military budget and far less than the US has spent on recent wars, the Ukraine has managed to decimate the military capacity of the US's largest historical enemy. If one only cares about transactional costs, pretty decent deal. Especially when you consider that most of the money spent is getting rid of obsolete US weapons sitting in warehouses or going to US weapon manufactuers to produce economic activity in the US.
Like when Canada donates a NASAMS air defense system to Ukraine (much needed!) what that really means is spending money in the US that grows the US economy.
