Climate Change - increasingly horrible disasters loom

...............

there is so much out there about this - I don't really need to provide a lot of sources - a quick google search will find you thousands of links

of course there are the climate change deniers

and there are those who say what little we can do won't be nearly enough

just one link:

from the article:

"Multiple studies published in peer-reviewed scientific journals show that 97 percent or more of actively publishing climate scientists agree*: Climate-warming trends over the past century are extremely likely due to human activities. In addition, most of the leading scientific organizations worldwide have issued public statements endorsing this position. "

couldn't resist one more link - story about Siberia, one of the coldest places on earth where there is human habitation - they now face 100 degree days and multiple wildfires caused by them

Climate change isn’t problem

Sure .
Climate change isn’t problem because losing 50% of the population doesn’t mean extinction of the species like the dinosaur, so we all good .

Climate change isn't that big a problem for some people because the vast vast majority of people dying because of it, at least in our lifetimes and those of our children, are going to be in places like Bangladesh.

Nut Nut has apparently never been to the middle of America.

You might have to buy boots and a snow shovel, but there is no shortage of livable space.

Also, no species like ours has ever gone extinct, because none have ever existed in the planet's history. If dinosaurs had a viable space program, they'd still be in charge. Humanity would be able to solve a minor problem like misbehaving space debris. Dinosaurs put all their points into STR and DEX and it bit them in the ass. INT gang rise up!

You have never been to the middle of America after the Ogallala Acquifer dries up.

When you say a "species like ours" ..... what do you find the defining characteristics of home sapiens. It seems that our big brains cause us to be fearful of each other. I can't think of a more frightened species. We accumulate money because we seek insulation from inevitable struggle and death. We are also an uncooperative species. Look at how people choose their independence from the connection between their actions and the well being of the group at large. We are a callous species who doesn't give a damn about the life and death of people we don't know. We are a consummately selfish species and constantly jockeying for competitive position vs each other.

The number of people who give a damn about the species as a whole is very small.

We actually have religious cults who believe that the Earth is a temporary depot en route to a post-apocalyptic heaven. The people interested in conducting that experiment are winning.

Hard to label a species that willfully sullies its own habitat as an intelligent one.

I like how Nut Nut states:

I don't think that's remotely true

I don't think that's remotely true

It helps if you define what you mean by "that's". Your comment is completely vague.

He's not wrong.

It's not true that humans are uncooperative. Quite the contrary.

I am rooting for the climate to change... I was getting a little sick and tired of everything being so goddamn consistent and boring.
Giving humans hurdles and trauma to overcome is both healthy and empowering

Sorry Luciom.
Your utopia of a warmer Italia with climate changes might not happen ….

Yup, higher temperatures seem to mean higher disruption of the climate with more volatility-> more extreme events !

Not what you think would be , a smoother average for everyone .
Which many posters here told it wasn’t realistic .

6 Conclusions
This study offers a comprehensive examination of extraordinary precipitation in the Spanish mainland, drawing on a new catalogue of monthly Rx1day records. It highlights the significant spatial and temporal variability of such events and underscores the influence of geographical features and weather patterns on extreme rainfall distribution. The catalogue, spanning from 1916 to 2022, provides valuable insights into the frequency, intensity, and distribution of high rainfall events, contributing to a better understanding of their historical context and patterns, and offers an exhaustive cartography of each event. Key findings from the study include:
Extraordinary precipitation events, though rare, occur with a frequency worth noting across the Spanish mainland. From 1916 to 2022, a total of 4814 days recorded rainfall exceeding 100 mm in at least one observatory (12.4% of days), and rainfall over 200 mm has been recorded in 530 days (1.4% of time).
Mediterranean regions, particularly along the eastern coast and southern regions, experience higher frequencies of extreme rainfall compared to other areas. In contrast, Atlantic influences are more significant in the northern and western parts of the Iberian Peninsula.
No temporal trend is detected in the frequency of extraordinary events in the Spanish mainland (period 1916–2022).
The relief plays a crucial role in shaping extraordinary rainfall event patterns. Atlantic advections produce heavy rainfall far inland from the west, while Mediterranean advections tend to be concentrated along the coast due to the barrier effect of mountain ranges.
A few weather types are associated with most extraordinary precipitation events. For instance, cyclonic conditions and easterly flows are prominent in Mediterranean regions, while west and south-west advections are linked to rainfall in northern and western areas. Seasonal variability shows that autumn (in the Mediterranean coast) and winter months (in northern, western and southwestern regions) are more prone to extreme events, although significant rainfall also occurs in summer and spring.
The extraordinary precipitation events catalogue, while comprehensive, does not yet cover the archipelagos and might miss events below the established thresholds that could have had significant local impacts.
In conclusion, this study underscores the need for ongoing research to track trends in extreme precipitation and adapt to potential future changes. While no significant increase in extreme rainfall has been observed in Spain over the study period, continued monitoring and analysis are essential for understanding the evolving patterns of extreme weather and mitigating its impacts on both natural systems and human societies.

Not sure why you present a study that look at a period where climate changes wasn’t much of a problem yet to compare with what scientific model are projecting in the future with the present problematic climate change trend .

people claim that RIGHT NOW we already have significant effects of climate change.

there was a flood recently in Spain which bad faith climate extremists claimed on climate change.

fact is that for Spain, provenly, rain intensity didn't change at all recently (as per study).

so people who claimed it did and caused the floods can be forever discarded as bad faith anti science people outside of the conversation forever

If you're referring to Valencia you're spouting nonsense again.

by Luciom k

there was a flood recently in Spain which bad faith climate extremists claimed on climate change.

Let's unpack. All of the following are facts which Luciom does not dispute.

1) Greenhouse gases like CO2 and methane in Earth's atmosphere are the ONLY thing which keeps heat inside the Earth's atmosphere. Without a small proportion of these gases in the atmosphere, the Earth's oceans would be frozen.

2) The level of greenhouse gas forcing in the atmosphere has doubled in the last century. Paleo-climate reconstruction of historic greenhouse gas levels for the last 800K years is made possible by extracting ice core fossils and measuring the gas bubbles trapped within.

3) Warmer air holds more water than cooler air. Each degree Celsius increases atmospheric water holding capacity by 7%. A warmer atmosphere sucks moisture from the ground and increases the extremes of evaporation and precipitation.

4) Luciom follows the playbook of Joseph Goebbels. Keep repeating the big lie and accuse your opponents of the thing you are yourself guilty of. In this case .... bad faith.

Until this moment, Senator, I think I never really gauged your cruelty or your recklessness. Have you no sense of decency, sir, at long last?”

These words were uttered by Joseph Welch in response to Joseph McCarthy in 1954 during McCarthy's anti-communist hearings in the Senate.

They apply to you Luciom.
