US Immigration Crisis

US Immigration Crisis

I didn’t see an immigration thread so I figured I would add one. This problem seems to be worsening everyday of the current admin. Hopefully some of our new elected officials can help with this. Mr. Luttrell is a great start

Yes. Go home and come back to us through the front gate instead of the back door.

You did a great job answering the question, "Seriously?" Now answer this one.

by King Spew k

and, what do think immigration lawyers have been doing..instead?

I have absolutely no idea what an average immigration lawyer does all day, but my guess it isn't helping people follow the natural immigration process, since that should be pretty straightforward.

You apply, wait your turn, take a citizenship test, post a photo of you with your flag online, and then live that American Dream.

We have far, far too many lawyers in this country.

have one friend from scotland who married an american and one friend sponsoring his au pair who also married an american for citizenship - both require an immigration lawyer to hold their hand through every step of the journey

they mentioned it really sucks and is very expensive as a result but without an immigration lawyer it'll never make any forward progress

Oh noes, increasing demand for goods and services; that sounds just terrible for the economy.

I never said it was good or bad for the economy. I was just refuting his idiot take that immigrants lower housing prices. its a slight positive for total gdp and big negative for gdp per capita

This should be the companion piece of kicking all the illegals out, then. Simplify the process of coming here through the front door.

None of you morons understand when a statement is absolute and when it isn't.

Like it was for the first 120 years of the USA, yes. Make America great again.

My parents were immigrants to Canada and they never got free accommodation, cell phone or cash cards

The system should allow for seasonal workers and legal migration and asylum claims

Lets be honest Trump will have a tough time deporting all the criminals and folks that had their hearings and need to leave. Especially when states like California and NY will not cooperate

Immigration has been rounding up folks for decades. Just didn't make the news much. I worked at a place that got raided back in the early 90s. It was white collar too.

Be patient with us. My early childhood diet was at least 7% Crayola-based.

Trump says we're the only country in the world that has birthright citizenship when he signs the EO. He is just amazingly ignorant and dumb.

Don't forget, the same people that scream "constitution!" every time we try to do something about the horrific gun violence here are perfectly fine with ignoring the same constitution here.

Somehow, I'm having a hard time believing that the people who proposed and passed the 14th amendment had open borders and anchor-babies in mind. They were trying to solve the issue of former slaves struggling with navigating society after we abolished slavery.

It's pretty wild for the same people who want to claim the second amendment doesn't actually allow for Jimbo to own an AR15 to also point to the 14th amendment and say people are Nazis for not wanting to grant automatic citizenship to a child of foreign nationals who snuck in illegally to give birth.

I don't expect everyone to have consistent rationales for their opinions, but at least acknowledge that you're being irrational.

The borders were open at the time! Jesus ****ing Christ! Immigration was virtually automatic in the USA until the Chinese Exclusion Act.

You presume a lot of ****. Obviously the 2nd amendment means you can have an AR15.

Yeah, that's the point.

Anchor-babies born to people sneaking in illegally wasn't on their radar because the very concept itself didn't exist.

You aren't necessarily the target audience for that statement. You've historically been well within the rational zone on the 2p2 politics forum spectrum. Consider yourself collateral damage because you were the most recent person to speak on that topic.

Edit: To be clear, I understand that AR15s didn't exist then as well. But Trump's EO opens the lines of communication on clarifying that old policy. If people want to stop the 2nd Amendment from applying to the crazy weaponry we have today, they should do the same thing.

Before the 14th though the US already recognized any free white (specifically just not-black) person born in the US as a citizen - even if their parents just got off the boat.

I'm sure you have difficulties accepting lots of historical facts, but nontheless the 14th was passed well before the entire concept of "illegal immigration" became federal law.

I'm aware of the struggles of black people 200 years ago.

Our constitution being a living document is a feature, not a bug. Elections have consequences and if Trump wants to try to challenge the limitations of the 14th amendment, that's his prerogative to do so. We have systems in place to handle overstepping.

Trump is not a typical politician and little things like decorum and maintaining the dignity of his office are of no concern to him. This is exactly what a majority of voters signed up for.

Now you're getting closer to arguing in good faith: you don't actually care about history or precedent. Trump is running the ship now and as obedient subjects we have to support his efforts to overturn Constitutional law.

It takes a lot of intellectual dishonesty to claim that ending birthright citizenship isn't a clear violation of the constitution. Will the SCOTUS uphold that or will they be political activists? Dunno. I think they actually will stop Trump and likely Thomas and Alito are the only ones unprincipled enough to go along with Trump, but I guess we'll see.

USA just used to be way more cosmopolitan. People would be speaking German or Polish or Spanish or Dutch or Swedish or Yiddish all over and not just in the big cities. The MAGA **** isn't a callback to the Constitution or any of the freedoms talked about in the Bill of Rights. It's a callback to the rise of Nationalism in the early 20th Century when racist laws were being enacted around immigration and fronted by the America Firsters like this guy:

2 illegals does not = a legal

Anyone supporting birthright citizenship is supporting an attack on our nation and its people.

"Our nation"? Are you American?

What, if anything, do you think should happen to such people?
