1/3 Grinding and Bankroll
Hi all,
First post in this specific forum. Normally post in NL Strategy. Hoping for some feedback about bankroll management.
I started playing 4-5 times a week at MGM National Harbor in March after a few months off. Previously I had been playing at MD Live and lost most of what I had won (around $1,200). Anyway, I took $200 to the casino and tried my luck. No bankroll to start really.
I had a great March (+$3,000) but a terrible April (-$3,000) after trying 2/5 and losing $1k and a horrific 24-hour session where I dumped $1,800 in just cooler after cooler (set over set, AK into AA, nut flush v. boat, etc.). This month I'm up around $1,000 so far. Any tips about bankroll management that can keep me from losing it all again? Do you set some of your winnings aside for example?
I have a somewhat steady income outside of poker but my goal is to make poker a supplement to that income and not just a break-even hobby.
Appreciate the feedback.
Thanks,
DT
I missed it too, saw some cool photos though. Was stuck piles but at least I made a good comeback at the end to be stuck a lot less than my peak, AA all in pre helped. Also won a $9k pot sdAA made nut flush to second nut flush against action player and he jammed flush turn with a set as backup and I held.
But otherwise got pretty destroyed, lost 56 to 77 on 347, lost KQJ96 on 665 to AA65, lost QQJ88 to J6 on J64 in 4! bet low spr, lost KQJT9 all in pre to "blind" hand AKKQT (he does jam blind a lot), lost dsAA to another blind hand (this time some garbage), lost JJ+wrap multiway to low straight+two pair, lost AJ864ds to action player with KK all in pre. Lots AK998ds in 3! pot as well. Booked a win in the big game but lost a lot at 1/2 5 other than the all ins pre with e.g. TT664 on 952 to a wrap I was heavily blocking with no pair. It felt like a somewhat degen session that put me out of my comfort zone and not in a good way, pushing the boundaries of how much I am willing to lose in one night. At least in the end I was stuck on par with previous losing sessions. Still not a great feeling.
Importantly, still doing incredibly well this month this early in May, at this rate will be another record month! Got plenty of sleep, lattes now, some exercise later and I scheduled a coaching session. Staying positive. "You're doing incredibly well."
Won at 1/2 plo but lost at 25/25, ran meh heads up against action player playing 50/100 and earlier in the session lost with top pair back doors to a wrap no pair at a low med spr, a virtual coin flip. The winner told me I needed to come in for more than I did and I got a little upset since we had all been buying in short after the first buy in. So then I bought in to have most of the table covered. He got what he wanted. lol.
How do you deal with days where it just does not go your way? Last night I lost 80% of my bankroll actually getting it in good, 5 times, heads up & 3 way all in usually on safe turns and not pre-flop. Yet some how they river their 10% outers all 5 times. Extremely tilted and frustrated, would like to hear your opinion.

Well I had one of those days the other night and it wasn’t fun. I just play through it, remind myself I’m doing well overall and it’s one long session and right now isn’t going to make or break my lifetime results. If I don’t think I can continue to play well I will quit and come back the next day. Having a stop loss can help too.
If you feel yourself getting tilted I strongly suggest stepping away from the table and going for a walk or taking some other kind of break to cool off.
Good Mother’s Day dinner, good sleep and exercise, water is out at mgm lol. Janitors are manually flushing toilets with buckets of water stored in recycling containers. Omg!
Sorta slow session but running fine. Sticking to minimal commitment with marginal hands and maximum with strong hands. May have said this before but…Poker is really investing at a micro level. Put more money into safe bets and less or none into riskier ones. When you have 80% equity you want to put as much money in as possible to get a good return most of the time. Some people are willing to get it in with 55-60% too. The moderate gamblers among us anyway. lol.
Some of us are even crazier and just get it in with enough equity to be just neutral or slightly plus EV…! All those rich people doing $5k plo flips for fun, I’m talking to you
It's tough to gii more than 60% in PLO, isn't it? LOL.
Blackhorn, I feel you. I don't play with that much of my bankroll, but I lost every flip, etc., Friday night against literally the worst PLO players I've ever seen. So frustrating. You might want to set a stop at a much smaller loss and just leave when you hit it. The game will always be there (I hope).
Set over set is a common one where we have more like 80%+, even more on the turn, and good ds aces are going to be more like 65% all in pre heads up.
You can also get it in with a pair and a draw and be freerolling the f out of V who has a worse draw and or same draw no pair. Don't forget the value of the humble pair, even in plo.
Good start to the day, plenty of sleep, lattes sun music vlogs and then some exercise. Had a shorter than usual session yesterday as the game broke so I should be super energized for today.
colluding couple are no longer playing at same table after a bunch of us signed a letter asking management to separate them, which is very good for the game.
Other night dude with afro after I lost a pot said to me "why didn't you give me that action when I was in a hand against you earlier?" I though that was pretty rude and we had a little back and forth that ended up with him calling out my hairline and telling me no one swipes right on me and I'm not a man, unlike him who has a palm tree growing on his head, lol. I just reminded him that everyone saw him go south earlier and what makes me a man is that I would never go south.
Good start, ran meh at the mix with 235A in a-5 triple draw, in big o lost with AKQJ2 on QT3r both my bdfds to bottom set, and then finally was called for plo and ran well (surprise), nice to switch to a lower variance game. Won an AA early on then chipped up, won set over set as well. Limped KK and he didn’t see it coming.
Made good folds with bad sets twice and got punished, I was blocking my own outs, rivering quads both times, once against top boat and second time..?? Ayeee!
Lost nut sttaight plus redraw to nfd and top three double flush draw to gutter plus flush draw as well. About even today so far.
Started running bad. aKT43 on AA4 lost to A8764, then AQT96 lost to TT on 6695T. Then won a limp raised AA against a tilted player and up on the session again. He was trying to get me he said …he said I work for the casino lol ….
Lost a dsAA three ways pre for a big pot, lost a dsKK865on T86 against AT, and lost JT984ds against two short stacks, then called it a night on a thankfully rare (as of late) L.
Woke up a little earlier than expected, still got a decent eight hours though so should be good to go after a little extra coffee, coaching session later then time to hit the tables again. (Student read my guide and booked a win, woo-hoo!)
My poker buddy who went to law school wants to come back to poker, says too much work and not enough life, and he heard about my results this year and wants to grind plo now lol. Funny how our lives took opposite paths.
Despite a little rough waters lately, doing very well!
Doing not great again tonight, lost nut open ender and flush draw plus overpair to set at 10/10, lost two KKs at 1/2 against action Vs (once he had AA other time he had 97745), staying patient and grateful for all the run good leading up to the past few days despite the bumps in the road lately. If I make what I’ve made so far this month in the last half of the month I will be ecstatic. The first KK was for a large side pot when the short stack definitely had AA, the second was marginal against an unpredictable V…but short I went with it.
Colluder husband said I need to take my medicine again after I asked how much he had behind (he was holding his chips) and I called the floor on his butt and he got another warning like last time. It’s pretty damn offensive of a put down for me especially and anyone else who actually takes medicine.
People not as powerful are the ones who have bad things to say. Just a reminder

That’s me, I’m the student! Talk soon coach, run good!
Doing all right, lost an AA multi-way but won a couple others, was forced to put $175 into the pot with a trash hand after I jokingly said to my neighbor “all in” while showing him my hand and laughed and mucked, the stuck gambler who raised called the floor on me and forced me to put in a pot sized raise. Up a little right now.
About even on the day, left for 5/T which looked decent and lost a few hundo, chopped JJ to A6s all in pre for $1500 even after flopping a set, it ran out a straight lol. Back to plo after game broke, running ok now. Not the best games lately, been sorta slow. At least inflation easing is sending the markets up up and up.
Late start today, needed the extra zzz's after a few lame sessions I guess, feeling sorta crappy when I woke up and popped a tylenol for a mild headache, feeling a little better even if a bit nauseous watching some poker vlogs and phil helmuth blow ups. Even small changes to my sleep schedule can mess with my body. Been having more chest spasms too, like heart skipping a beat lately. colluder husband has bee deliberately seat changing next to me lately after the petition was sent, I was worried he had a device to send radiation or other bad brain waves in his jacket pocket lol.
Doing really well anyway this month, no reason to complain and many reasons to be thankful.
Another meh start today, lost TT in a 3! pot at 5/10/25 before plo where I lost AATT to colluder wifeÂ’s KK all in pre, lost with set to straight and I had back door nut flush draw, lost Ks full to quads as well. The game quality has not been great the past few days either. Also lost KK876ds in 3! pot on 589r to JTT35, 53 runout. And just lost an AA to AKQ53ds all in pre for $675 lol
Game broke and I played 10/25, lost stand up game once, beat it once jamming A9o over some limps, was very card dead the whole time and very frustrating. Railbird came by and made a snarky comment about how short everyone was sitting in the game and not in the greatest mood by now I told him to put up or shut up (more or less) and asked him to stop railing the game and he left.
Plo opened up again a few hours later and I made a little rebound before the action player self-transferred off our game and the game broke and I left for the day stuck again, but not as much as I was an hour before. Got ATT93ds all in pre against action and flopped quads, some other smaller pots too.
Colluder husband often says mean things like did you take your medicine and “he’s not connected to reality, he’s psychotic.” Obviously very hurtful to me in particular. Last night he accused a player of going south he had lost a pot to, even though the player had lost a lot to someone else in the meantime. I chimed in “he’s seeing things, he’s not connected to reality,” and he got upset and called the floor who said players are allowed to talk to their neighbors. I was laughing so hard I could not contain myself. He has no power over me.
Booked a good win at 10/10, AAKQ9ds held five ways pre all in, then bled down card dead for a while and called it a session when I got tired. Also won at 1/2 5 card chipping up here and there. Pretty nice rungood day, needed it!
Good start to the day, lattes, laundry music, getting flamed by strangers online...the usual, lol. (Two plus two can be such a supportive community sometimes!)
Glad I booked the nice win last night, it was starting to get a little depressing there for a minute and on the verge of turning into a downswing.
People ask what good is professional poker and is it ethical. I've had my moral qualms about the game myself. Then I reflect on how much the game has given to me over the years, from friends and acquaintances and travels, and of course the money and financial security. Not to mention a way to earn a living for someone who didn't quite fit in to the regular 9 to 5 routine due more or less to disability. For me these things have been a real blessing that have kept me going all these years. So for all the costs associated with problem/pathological gambling, there are a lot of societal benefits for a lot of people like me too which are nothing to sneeze at. I could be much worse off right now but instead I am doing something I enjoy and am good at, giving me self-fulfillment and a purpose in life. I tell people all the time who ask if I travel that I have no need to travel because I am happy here, which is true.
So people who think poker is evil and a net negative, remember there are a lot of people out there who derive a huge benefit from the game, making their lives much better off. Keeping someone like me occupied and mentally well counts for a lot when the alternatives are often so dreary and dire.
Just 3! AAT82ss and folded to a 4! and a cold 5! jam for $11,000 and would have been scooped by action player’s KK. Running hot!!
