2024 World Series of Poker May 28th to July 17th ***No Spoilers***
The 2024 WSOP will take place at Horseshoe Las Vegas and Paris Las Vegas from May 28 to July 17, 2024, with the Main Event running from July 3 to July 17. The Main Event – poker’s undisputed freezeout world championship – will have four starting days, beginning on Wednesday, July 3. Players may also register directly on Day 2.
This was almost definitely his best strategy. Even wo the rail aid, Tomayo was going to have the edge esp in a protracted match. This is exactly what makes Lena call so punty. Mathematically it might be close but with the edge he had over Griff, why take such a high variance approach.
Doesn't seem likely it's close mathematically if I constructed a range I thought he'd have there, a solver though probably has a call there (I'm not looking it up) with a non club king vs someone else playing as one but vs a human? Ax clubs AQ clubs possibly Kx clubs something like that maybe AK with a club, vs all overpairs, sets, etc. Not sure it's there from a human standpoint and I also don't remember griff overbet bluffing that size offhand, maybe he did at one point. Astedt in the post interview said griff's a wildcard and sometimes you have to guess, and he guessed wrong.
I really don't have a strong opinion on the Kim play yet, but I do think "How dead are you when you're wrong?" has to be a consideration. One thing that's lost in the hand is that he actually had reasonable equity even after getting called (32%). Unless you're up against exactly AA or KK, you're actually going to suck out a lot against the rest of the calling range. Doesn't mean it was a good play, but we're forgetting all the runouts where the board will bring gore against stuff Astedt can call
You're not wrong, but isn't this the case with every play labeled a "punt"?
Who the Main event champion is does not directly do anything for poker growth as a whole these days, especially with it being off of mainstream TV or news.
A woman winning would be the exception or a winner from Brazil, China, Japan, India for recognition in those countries where poker has potential to explode more.
But pretty much any American male winning doesn’t move the needle much these days no matter who it is.
This, all of this. And even if the Main does make mainstream news, which it still sort of does, access to online poker has far more to do with any uptick in participation. This is why I often hold that Chris Moneymaker's role in igniting the 2000s boom is somewhat overrated (while also not insigificant), that the growth of online poker in the U.S. had far, far more to do with it. But when I say that in the wrong place, I swear the casual fans in the room want to declare a fatwa.
Right now, at least in much of the U.S., there's not much that can be done in that regard. Drawing thousands or even millions to a venue accomplishes nothing if the doors are still locked (Colombian and Argentinian football fans notwithstanding).
As for the bolded, I thought similar when Shiina Okamoto was getting some screen time, that she was the ultimate exception to the "no one champion does a poker boom make" rule. Of course, I'm at best the 12,312th person to think of that when it came to her.

Arieh made a good point that they should've had a nick/ali recap postgame style show with a winner interview; I can understand pokergo almost certainly loses a lot of money but that event should have a little exception to the others.
wait is anyone actually concerned about the rail looking up hands and telling the player afterwards if they made an EV/frequency mistake or not?
like if you happened to have a bunch of really good players in the rail who would know the answer to a spot and basically tell you afterwards that you messed up wouldn't that be the exact same thing?

I’m not
It’s not a good look though at all and anyone with a decent EQ and awareness would realize that
But we get it, there was a lot of money on line so they just did what they did. But they shouldn’t act uppity about it afterwards
haha oh jeeez... all this time, I'd referred to the guy on Tamayo's rail as "laptop guy" or "corner man," not knowing that was Dominik Nitsche. Add poker to the long list of arenas in which I know many names while at the same time having no idea what they look like.
Not it isn’t at all “good for poker” to see a bunch of dorks with a laptop so visible on the rail. This ship has sailed though. Before all of the tools that have come out the last few years though it was just the upper echelon of players who would have access to this kind of stuff, and as Pads mentioned they would just have someone running it remotely and getting the info to the players via someone else on the rail. At least now there is greater access for everyone with GTO wizard.
Honestly I
Who was using a phone in the hand? Every thing Tomayo was doing would still happen under A or B. And B pretty much is current rule.
Didn't they say during the updated announcements before every tournament that solvers of any kind could not be used anywhere in the tournament area? Pretty sure it did, and the rail of the final table certainly is in the tournament area.

I thought it was Poindexter

I thought I heard the same thing. I was honestly waiting for them to have security come in and escort his rail out
Def nit the person I remember. But then again, I don’t follow much less idolize them.
I will say his rail action did reinforce my recent experience. Was in LV in early/mid June. Not there for WSOP but we’re staying at Paris so made couple trips down just to see and experience it.
One visit, walking back to Horseshoe casino from HS tournament area, we bumped into McKeehan. Honestly I did not even notice him. Wife who is more of a f@n than I did. He was not in a tournament. Wasn’t rushing anywhe
Get a hotter wife.

WSOp is notorious for being an old boys club. Look at guys like Men the master who are allowed to cheat over and over because they were once a WSOP household name. There’s absolutely no way that behavior would be allowed at a WPT or Triton event, let alone the final table. It’s laughable. If it wasn’t a past ME champ and a rail full of big name pros they would have said something.

To use solvers it's probably an unfair advantage vs. someone who not use it. But poker is a game/'sport' where ethics doesn't count much. Did you hear in the video, Nitzsche says to Toamayo something like: go to him (to Griff) and shake his hand.
Thats says it all..If you have somekind of charakter, it should be the first thing after the match to go to the opponent and shake his hand.

I can’t see someone being afraid to upset the star power of Dom Nitschke
I doubt anyone was paying attention or realized and that’s if it was against the rules. I don’t know the rules

As someone who plays a seemingly very basic level I’m confused to what advantage a computer could give you after the hand. Sure they can see the hands being played in the delay but could Griff just adjust his play anyway.

Just on a basic level, could have stack sizes plugged in and show him optimal opening ranges, calling, 3 betting ranges etc. or the next hand.
It is absolutely crazy that the two day PokerGO coverage of the FT won't include Ali, Schulman, Hanks or Platt. Instead we get two days of Lon and Norm.
qft
a change needs to be made. several years past due at this point
I hate the rail stuff, and players pumping their fists after winning small pots
Was better when crowd was mostly blacked out, wasn’t a bunch of people chattering in background, and focus was mostly on table.
qft
a change needs to be made. put the focus back on the table. have a stage/set-up that doesn't allow the players to stray from the table to speak to anyone (their only interaction w other ppl should only take place during breaks). block any sounds that aren't table talk
How can anyone complain about Lon and Norm the banter has been amazing. And Lon even though his vocab for poker isn't GTO he's done a good job of reading the action tonight
nsis
Worst take of the thread. They (live Lon and Norm) make the entire process of watching the WSOP worse.
this
432m in chips doesn't make for a very big physical stack.
They colour up too much. I want to see big stacks.
meh
Player A: "How much are you playing?"
Player B (30 seconds later): "About 33, 34 million."
There was also that K7K74 board. The river comes, and Lon says "Griff hits his four."
brutal
epic cringe moment among many for Lon this WSOP

players are allowed to access their phones during a hand?
who knew
2019 Ho won a High Roller at the Commerce for over $200k .. pretty much all of her other 'wins' come from TV type shows PAD, NGNF that were probably SNGs.
She does have quite a few FTs with a few 3rd/4th, but no 2nds or other 'major' 1sts.
Doesn't mean she doesn't know what she's supposed to do .. certainly with 66 is comes down to stacks and position.
While I'm not a big fan of Ho,

I don’t mind Lon and Norm. Im not watching the ME for strategy insight, it’s just entertainment. Does it really ruin your experience when Lon says “so and so hits his 4”?
