Hot Fun in the Summertime: Lounge LC Thread
I had to invoke Sly.

lol, so y'all gonna ostracize Lounge stalwart MSchu for having the wrong politics now, awesome.
Look how fast that happened. It seems like the Lounge used to have a no politarding policy for this very reason.
I pretty much stopped contributing here because of him anyway. I probably shouldn't pop in to refute his bullshit, not because he doesn't deserve it but out of respect for everyone else here.

I find it mind boggling. Surely they can find another place to discuss their virtue.

No body is being ostracized. We're all intelligent people here.
But I won't tolerate any flat earthers.

I had a disturbing encounter on X today where a guy went from “I like the pic of sleeveless ScarJo holding a rifle you posted” to “I actually prefer THIS (old jeans ad with shirtless pretty boy holding an infant)” in about 6.4 seconds.
Screenshots or gtfo?
you can pump your own for about a year now, but every station still has someone who will do it for you if you want.
it’s a ploy, car dealerships make their money from service, not the sale.
What about NJ, can you pump your own there yet?
On the subject of automobiles, a couple hours ago someone knocked, then rang the bell.
When I answered, young man said he saw my Ranger and said he'd like to buy it. The truck is a 2002, but is in pretty good shape, and has ~104K miles. Well-maintained, though it's coming up on needing a transmission I think.
I really like it. It's a great vehicle for around-town, and getting stuff for the occasional project. It's old enough that it has a two-seat cab and a six-foot bed, which I don't see any more. It's the old small truck, which is perfectly sized for me to drive. No interest in "upgrading" to something with a short bed and wasted cab space.
"What's your price?"
"You can't afford it."
"Come on, what's your price?"
"$50,000"
"No really, what will it take?"
"$50,000"
I told him how much I like it, and wasn't interested in selling. He said that someone he knew used to have a similar truck, but it got wrecked, and that he had to try.
"Of course," I said, "It can't hurt to ask. Just wait for me to die, and you can buy it from my estate."
He laughed, and said thanks for my time.
Pump your own gas.
Millions of people thought Nixon Reagan & Dubya each were going to destroy America, if not the entire world, too.
Speaking of POTII and pumping gas:
I measure a successful round of golf these days by the number of balls I lose or gain. I was plus two last week.
As with all things, you gotta learn to adapt.

Speaking of POTII and pumping gas:
They kinda did though, with enthusiastic help from Dems. (Some might say it really started with Reagan, then Clinton.)
Wars on terror/drugs: conservatively $8 trillion gone (25k per American). Millions of innocent people dead or ruined. Made the problems worse (as intended). Also got us mass surveillance and incarceration, eroded civil liberties and a robust, militarized police state.
Debt not looking good.
College is basically free ---> you'll start out life tens of k in debt.
Home ownership in most populous areas, stay at home parents and decent HC you can afford to use are luxuries.
Homelessness, suicide, overdoses, broken families, obesity... seemingly all bad stuff on the rise.
Environment not looking good.
Immigration policy = lower wages and higher rents for ordinary people, cheap labor with no rights for our rulers. They almost all like this situation and will never take the obvious steps like ending demand by cracking down on employers, but differ a bit on how much to scapegoat and brutalize the immigrants that they want to be here, and want to be here illegally.
It was a national scandal that senator Nixon was getting help with travel expenses from donors (this is why Checkers the dog is famous) --> both parties and 99% of campaigns financed with billions from the same special interests. You can legally give a politician millions in bribes that they get to personally keep if you pretend it is speaking fees, consulting fees, jobs for them, jobs for family, etc. Lobbying is a $4.5 billion industry at the federal level alone.
We did rural electrification, helped beat the axis, built the interstate highway system and put a man on the moon with far fewer resources than we have today. Now if someone proposes that like, school kids should get healthy food, this is equated to saying we should give everyone a pony and those and power will unite to crush you.
For comparison, this is how Japan feeds school kids.
Do you like how Japan handles school discipline? How does Tokyo’s subway system compare to NYC’s?
When I was 10 years old I walked to school every morning. It was about two miles. Walked the same route every day.
In one spot near home, for two or three years, Route 95 was being built. Jumped on the tractors and ran through the huge drainage pipes on weekends.
I don't know why I thought of this, but it doesn't seem so long ago.

I thought about this the other day:
When I was in 1st grade, our teacher lined us up and walked us 5 blocks to a construction site. The construction guys picked us up and put us in a clamshell excavator and hauled us up to the roof of the 3rd floor. Then they lifted us out and we all sat around and ate lunch with the workmen.
If a teacher did that today, she'd be thrown in jail. I feel lucky to have been born in a time when kids were still allowed to have childhoods.
