When I was nine years old, I walked, sometimes with my brother, to a movie theater two miles away. I know this because I saw Lawrence of Arabia there.

Now I see 20 kids waiting at a bus stop for school in the morning and twenty parents waiting along with them. I understand that parents will want to watch over first or second graders, but shouldn't one or two parents be enough?

And I can't chalk this up to our parents not giving a ****.

I’m the grandson of a plumber.

You know the 3 Rules of Plumbing then?

Social media fear mongering.

I'm trying to decide whether or not I should fail students who use AI. The benefit: I will have so few students left that correcting papers will be a breeze.

The drawback: I'll be lonely in class.

And the important first corollary: It ain't all ****.

I was thinking about weird place names in the US. There's Belchertown MA, Bird-In-Hand and Intercourse, both in PA. And before Intercourse, you will also find the PA town of Blue Ball.

I think it was in KS, but I ran across a town named Tightwad in my travels.

Edit: Maybe Missouri

My friend who teaches philosophy at a JC stopped assigning papers. It's crazy because writing papers is what philosophers do. But he saw it as the only viable option.

All their writing is done in class with a blue book.

Maybe they'll figure out a way to take that a step further, so you work on long term writing projects in a controlled environment. Like they must be written on designated computers or something.

Social media fear mongering.

so shall mediums of crystal balls bear lost sales costs when their predictions do not come true?
it is only one data point on the continum of ever-changing time

but perhaps at this moment
under current weather or not influences and because i noaa a meteorologist who has not been retired yet

people need to quickly pocket their phones and interact with each other in person as human beings

Jackass Butte

And it was great twenty years ago, when I first saw it.

i was away and insulated from all of this - so everything is now a big sudden shock

i was driven to things by adults other than my parents to the majority of things i went to - got carpooled to nearly everything because there was always another kid who lived somewhere nearby who was going to the same thing - ie my parents wouldn't be around for the hockey game etc

often times whichever adult gave us the ride would just drop us off and come back when it was over - the only time they'd stick around was when we had a game and even then it was 50/50

growing up my siblings and i walked down to where the school bus stopped to pick us up and no parent went with us, they could see us from the window if they bothered to look, but we were a good 300 or so yards downhill so very much alone and unattended

now everywhere there's just as many parents as kids wherever i look - school bus stop, little league practice, school dance, etc

my good friend was telling me how her kids had a school dance and she was going and she literally asked me if i wanted to come - i was very confused, why on earth would i volunteer to chaperone kids at a school dance - no less none of which were mine - and then later that night i got it - i finally understood why she had invited me - she sent pictures of the dance later and it was mostly parents cutting loose on the dance floor - made me think back to the dances we had which probably had 2-3 adults in total in attendance (probably more but that's all i remember) and i just couldn't believe it

also a neighbor is a single dad of 3, he'll occasionally just leave for a few minutes to run a quick errand and leave his kids behind - everyone in the neighborhood thinks he's insane - when i point out that we were all raised exactly like that they'll say "yeah but it's different now"

35+ years ago I was riding my bike past a park about 6 blocks from my sisters house. There were two kids playing catch there and I recognized them to be my nephews. So I stopped and played with them for a while. They were probably aged 8 nd 10 at the time.

They are both grown now with kids of their own and I asked them if they remembered that and if they would let their kids wander the neighborhood at that age and it was a resounding "hell no!" from both.

When I was a kid we would go all day without seeing or interacting with any adults. Both kids and adults prefered it that way šŸ˜€

This. I had to ask permission to come in the house, not to leave it.

I played baseball and basketball. My parents would try to attend one of my games a season to show their support. This I tolerated because of my gracious nature.

I messaged Zeno about a month ago but haven't heard back from him. I'm concerned because we know each other pretty well, and we even met up in NYC for a weekend a few years ago.

Going to Ireland next week with my friend Rob to play a little golf and explore. Rob just messaged me to confirm I'm leaving my car in Boston.

Confirm! We never even talked about it.

I'm concerned as well. I've corresponded with him, and he seems resilient and resourceful, but this is worrying.

I have to go with Tangent.

I have to go with Tangent.

That was my second choice because, you know, redeye often goes off on one.

Happy Friday!

Anybody ever seen the Allied Injury Group commercials? They are hilarious! I have the business channel (CNBC) on all day during the week and they run them all the time. I can't decide if they are genius or ineffective? They seem to be a cross between an SNL skit and Jackie Chiles from Seinfeld. On one hand I enjoy watching them and am talking about them here. On the other hand if I did need an injury lawyer I am not so sure they would be my first call?
