Pre flop check up posts.
I thought it would be helpful to start an ongoing thread where people can post pre flop situations they have questions a
Here’s another KQo hand. Straight forward older lady raises UTG. She’s limps in early position but when she raises she has a real hand. One cold caller and the LAG CU three bets. I’m on button with KQo. SB is a semi maniac and the BB is loose especially when stuck. What’s my best play?
Fold
4/8 LHE at The Orleans in Las Vegas tonight (8-9 handed always in flux):
I'm having one of those nightmare nights at 4/8 that we've all been thru. I've lost with KK, QQ, JJ & KJs (flopped TP) where I've raised PF as well as Q10o (flopped TP out of the BB and lost). I sat down with $230, now I'm down to $130 starting this hand (in for $100, I won $130 at 1/3 NL before coming over here....)
The main villain in this hand is an ATC bowling tournament dude who sat down an orbit ago and cannot lose. He's won the last three hands, so he is the kill pot and this hand plays 6/12. He's playing ATC garbage which keeps turning into 2P, trips or Full House :( but he has just been calling PF with ATC fwiw
as for the other players, they are a loose bunch who have been two or three betting light the entire time I've been sitting here. So I've tightened up a bit....to no avail :(
BUT...the hand in question tonight is one that I am still pondering if I did the right thing (win or lose). Playing stupid and getting there is for these other clowns , not me. So....
Hero is UTG and has A♠3♠ vs. the kill pot. there are 7 others still to act this hand, including the lucky kill pot dude. What does H do?
Call, then make the nut flush.

This is an easy fold.
What if I had KQs instead?

even easier fold than the previous hand, dont be results-oriented. id fold KQs too because UTG's range is so small.

Assuming this is a LA mid stakes game, I would 4bet KQs. That said, it’s really, really close and I think the CO’s range is a bigger consideration than UTG’s range. KQo is a snap fold and AQo is a fold here as well.
Whatβs βreal handβ? 77+ JTs+ QTs+? TT+ KQs AQ+? JJ+ AQs AK?
Semantics question for clarity, but wouldn't 'suited broadway' include KJs and ATs+? Or have a I been overvaluing 'suited broadway' cards(QTs, JTs) for years?
Phew, cool. At least I understand SOME concepts/terms correctly.
8/16 weak player limps in EP, ok aggro player in MP raises, folds, I am OTB with A5-A9s. Blinds tend to over defend.
Fold or 3 bet?

What do you range the player in EP on? What do you range the player in MP on? If you 3bet, what range are blinds continuing with?
As a default itβs a fold but that could tell you when you should deviate from that. I certainly know there are people I would 3bet for value against in those spots, expecting to have decent equity.

EP plays like a 3/6 player, most suited cards, any A, 65o etc. Aggro player opens pretty wide, SCs, any pair probably 66 or 77+, things like KJo. It was a weird spot because twice earlier aggro player would open and I would 3! OTB or in the CO with 88 and TT and the blinds would cold call. Not great hands for 4 way action.
I think I had the suited Aces twice in similar hands and folded.

Based off those ranges itβs pretty close to a 3bet.
against a LAG on the button and cutoff id 3b all suited aces and take a lot of 4 card flops multiway, not really caring if the blinds called or not.
Ok, So I got a def fold, a likely 3! based on reads and a def 3! against a LAGGy player. Tells me its very situational and read dependent. I need to get better.

having a 4 card flop is huge with hands like A3s because of the backdoors. if you just call pre and the flop is something like JT2 with one of your suit and the lag cbets, you have to almost always fold because you have people to act behind you. by 3 betting you get to realize your full equity b/c you can check behind flops like these and see if you turn a FD or straight draw. position is the most powerful thing in poker.
if the lag caps pre and then cbets, oh well that sucks, but at least you get to play postflop bingo.
Eh, itβs game dependent. If you play in games with a lot of donking I would discount the 4 card flop advantage significantly
