President Donald Trump

I assume it's still acceptable to have a Trump thread in a Politics forum?

So this is an obvious lie - basically aimed at

Fair enough.

But a similar point came up earlier, and you didn't even acknowledge that post.

That said, your point is well taken and thank you this time for responding to it.

Well there you go. After you understood the actual point I was making, you no longer felt the need to talk about dumb people of other races. ie I wasn't dodging anything, I was explaining the issue in as direct a manner as possible.

I assume some of what he says is true and some of it is made up. I don't have the energy to try and figure out which part is which.

Agreed, some true, a LOT false. This though........

Those are her words.

She texted me and said that she is gonna be in my area tonight. This could be it. I've been very patient and played the long game which I don't usually do. I'm actually cleaning and painting my place right now in preparation from her being too drunk to drive home.

Is hilarious. And the subsequent back and forth was great.

going to another country in case of something like cancer is probably cheaper for the same care

The logistics of this doesn't seem to pan out if you've ever known people getting cancer treatment.

catastrophe like car accident you negotiate a small monthly payment that you pay for essentially the rest of your life. it will be much lower than a healthcare premium is. or declare bankruptcy if you have no assets to take.

What's a small payment after spending two weeks in the ICU, two surgeries, and another two weeks in the hospital and the bill is $600K?

I'm not pissing on your Cheerios... if not carrying health insurance will make people not text while driving, I'm not all that against it.

What’s the comparison between voting for Trump in 2024 and believing in Alchemy during Newton’s time period?

Alchemy in Newton's time was cutting edge. It's not like there were volumes on nuclear physics and chemistry written then that Newton was simply ignoring.

Even in modern times, the world is full of examples of highly intelligent people who believed crazy things. Just google Linus Pauling and Vitamin C.

The vitamin C theory was "crazy"? There weree obvious logical flaws in it?

Hopefully some of you will remember that the original version of my stance came about because I was not sympathetic to racists and slaveholders of 200 years ago just because times were different. I had said then that enough was known such that smart people should not be able to fall back on that argument. John Quincy Adams was probablt the least racist president because he was the smartest president.

I was genuinely surprised by how much of The Dialogues is just Plato --speaking through Socrates-- going on about how hot Alcibades is. Like get to the point, my guy.

Sounds like the possible inspiration for Death in Venice by Thomas Mann.

Yes, continuing to promote those beliefs in the early 1980s, after overwhelming negative clinical data generated from studies done by the Mayo Clinic, was crazy.

I think Plato Republic is one the great works but I read it as about mind far more than about city. A (maybe 'the') key work on morality.

"The safest general characterization of the European philosophical tradition is that it consists of a series of footnotes to Plato."

Alfred North Whitehead

Get somebody to make a false claim about you.

I was shocked to find out how many false accusations there are. It's quite terrifying. I will be video recording all interactions going forward. I asked if I could wear a chest cam at work but they said no.

You seem to be an outlier here with respect to multiple sexual harassment allegations.

Have you stopped to consider that maybe you are doing something wrong at some point?

I have to say, mong is just the gift that keeps on giving. Last couple of days ITT have been priceless.

Timing was perfect. I needed a break.

by natediggity

Maybe you don't, but a lot of responses look like y'all do. I read his posts as a comedy act with a repetitive punchline...."we think she's on drugs." It is funny.

I actually believe Mongo.

Fair enough. Thanks for clarifying.

I'm definitely doing it wrong. I just have a thing for the problem girls. I hope this is my last.

Indeed although maybe we've added some new chapters since then. Not sure Plato had much to say about modal reality

Personally I'm basking in this version of reality where it's understood by everyone that 'Republic' is a mind not a city.

Translation: "I like to prey on problem girls, they are easier to manipulate"

My estimation of Mongi has gone up tbh.

Alfred North Whitehead

Personally, I like Aristotle better.

I wouldn't put it it this way. The city is mainly a vehicle for discussing other things.

Do you think Bobby Fischer was smart?

Insane people can be smart.

phew returning to this world. Semantics aside, imo he is constructing a city which represent the mind which is not some unitary decision maker but a balance of often conflicting interests. Morality is in part about protecting this mind. In part , the answer to the question he poses early on about how we should act if we can get away with it.

Nash was smart

I don't know where you got the idea that everyone here agreed with this interpretation. Searching for hidden meanings in ancient philosophy that are informed by modern notions of psychology and psychiatry seems dubious to me.
