Like almost all conspiracy theories, I'm inclined to take the event at face value. But I'll add that, if there was any serious presidential candidate, past or present, that would ever concoct such a thing , it would be trump.

I thought the more plausible theory was that the bullet ricocheted off something (podium or teleprompter) and he was hit by a fragment of that and not the actual bullet.
Either way, he knew how to capitalize on it and I know some people who think he's a fearless badass (they forget about the 5 draft deferments), but SS confirmed they killed the shooter and it wasn't until then that they let Trump stand up and do his act.

I don't even get the dem argument that biden wasn't gone 5 years ago.
Are they trying to convince us that repubs were lying the whole time about biden losing it for the last 5 years, while dems were hiding biden from the public for unknown reasons and while they were saying biden is sharp as a tack and then on debate day he got hit by a car and that is why all of a sudden he lost it?
Surely after he gets yanked from the ticket dems have to come clean and say "yes we were lying the last 5 years because we thought we could hide him for another couple months until after the election, but we forgot debates were a thing." At a certain point you just have to come clean and say "we stuck with biden because we don't currently have anyone electable to the general public but we are working on finding someone the public will like and being more honest with you".

For example, I think Trump would have no moral objection to straight up rigging a vote count to win an election. But that doesn't mean that it is more likely than not that he in fact rigged the vote count in the 2024 election. Practical considerations and the absence of affirmative evidence strongly suggest that he did not do so.

Inventing conspiracies about Trump will only give people an excuse to doubt the veracity of accounts of his actual frauds, crimes and conspiracies.
People say blatant stuff in media and social media all the time. The reasons can be many: Misinformation, mistake or muddying the waters. Trump is a corrupt fool which hates half his country and most of the world. And since hate and distrust is often mutual, it is probably not that hard to get people to believe lies. Caveat emptor is a good principle for reading news stories and social media takes, also those about Trump.

I also don't think we should be making decisions about what to believe based on what is easiest to stomach. It isn't easy for me to stomach that a sizeable percentage of the country apparently doesn't care, or doesn't care much, about democratic norms or civil liberties, but that seems to be the case.

My point is that "X person is capable of Y" is necessary but obviously and woefully insufficient, so much so that it often makes sense to assign very little weight to this factor when deciding whether X in fact did Y.
