Mel Brooks brought Anne Bancroft to meet his mother. He said, "Mom this is Anne. She's a Catholic."

His mother replied, "I'll be in the kitchen...My head will be in the oven."

Probably not true, but it sounds like Brooks.

Mel Brooks is a gift to the humanities

He was ahead of his time. Blazing Saddles is one of my all-time favorites and nothing like it had ever been made before it. I don't think I ever laughed harder in a theater. All of his movies are fantastic though. Producers, Young Frankenstien, History of he World etc. are all classics.

the line to be toed was traced around his bare feet

Red strikes again!!!!

through his often point blank yet not a cartoon voice of some social-analytical humor Mel Brooks made almost every audience uncomfortable in a most appropriate way

100% guaranteed that Blazing Saddles would not get greenlit today. And that is sad. He is a genius.

to be fair he also benefited from casting by a hall of fame of independently genius comedic actors

Huh? Wilder, Little, Mostel, Feldman, Pickens, Garr, Kahn, Leachman, Mars? All hacks!

Blazing Saddles was probably the first widely released β€œcould never be made today” movieβ€”people were saying that while it was still in the theaters!

Let’s add nine more for a top ten list:

Death Wish
Animal House
The Bad News Bears
Slap Shot

Spoiler
Show

She eats pvssy!

Fast Times At Ridgemont High
Sixteen Candles
RoboCop
Do The Right Thing
Menace II Society

I didn’t consider American History X because it lovingly sucked St Bernard balls aside from F❀️iruza. Kids & River’s Edge are sort of a gray area imo if they’re cult movies or not, though I did see Edge in a multiplex.

Sup, mofos??!!!

Just popping in, hope all is well.

Happy Derby day to those who celebrate!

Heard an interview with Brooks where he was talking about the pre-release viewings of Blazing Saddles with the studio execs. Went something like this:

'They told me I had to take this out, and that out. I said "ok, ok, ok." Then, I just never did.'

I'm always quoting this, but you have to be pretty old to get it...

Brooks definitely on the Mount Rushmore of celebrity interviewees, along with Noel Gallagher & Ozzy. Joan Rivers?

Last class yesterday. Five of my students go to lunch after class: a trans guy, a non-binary woman, a 40 year old Vietnamese immigrant, a White woman who's almost 50, and a Hispanic woman about 26 who's a pre-school teacher.

It's one reason I love teaching at a community college. This is a group that in some other place and time would have never gotten together.

They invited me, but I told them I couldn't go because I hadn't entered grades yet.

Not quite sure where this belongs and it hardly matters anymore anyway.

Let It Bleed & Morrison Hotel deservedly get a lot of credit for their back covers, but this is my secret personal favorite. It’s a wonderful photo & great designβ€”totally different from anything else they ever didβ€”and imo works better in general at some distance where you can’t quite read the print. I actually think it’s design class worthy.

I used to teach math at a community college in South Texas. My students were also gloriously diverse in many ways. I think ideally they coulda been working out their diverse math issues at a diverse high school somewhere. Needless to say, I soon learned teaching wasn't for me.

These days more and more students fail to show up for class, some maybe once every two weeks, or don't finish their work.

I've checked with others who are seeing the same thing, so I don't think it's me. But sometimes I just think I'm doing a bad job.

Thinking more and more about retirement, but I won't have much to do.

Anyway, off to Hilton Head tomorrow for a week of golf. Rain in the forecast for the first couple days, but bars are open.

It aint you college students have always been *******s! I know, I used to be one πŸ˜€ On the other hand Hilton Head sounds awesome! Retire already. I am guessing you don't need the dough. You are (slightly) older than me πŸ˜€ Not by much but yeah. Although your gig already sounds like semi-retired. I have a huge summer planned. A couple of weeks at WSOP, 3 Wisconsin trips, and a hiking tour of Washington State (Olympic NP, Mt Ranier NP, Deception Pass SP and (maybe?) Cascades NP. Gonna be a great summer!

I really don't have much to do if I retire. I am semi-retired , working 90 days a year. I have friends at work, not just colleagues. But if I retire, I know I'll go days without seeing anyone.

I'm also planning a trip to London and maybe a couple days in Paris. Also thinking of going to California to visit cousins for a few days.

And I was a terrible student as an undergrad. Much better when I got my two Masters.

Stick with it. Go back to school and get another Masters. Get a PhD. We'll help you with your homework. There are some unique minds here. I'm sure Red will be willing to write your dissertation.

Your pals,
