People have been talking about getting rid of the penny forever. The main problem is that no one spends pennies. They are just handed out as change in cash transactions and never recirculated.

In general you are right but you fail to consider a very important logistic element: republicans control the areas where food is grown, democrats live all amassed in easy-to-starve urban areas.

In case of an actual sectarian civil war with the militaries being approx evenly spread (any side who gets more militaries auto wins so we have to model the only case when that doesn't happen), having the farms (and the fossil fuel extraction areas) is worth more than having the universities and the museums, don't you think?
