Trump 2nd term prediction thread

Trump 2nd term prediction thread

So, looks like Trump not only smashed the electoral college, but is looking on track to win the popular vote, which seems to be an unexpected turn of events, but a clear sign of the current temperature in the country and perhaps the wider world.

Would be interested to hear views on how his 2nd term will pan out from both sides of the aisle - major happenings, what he's going to get done, what he's not going to get done, the impact of his election on the current conflicts in Ukraine and Gaza, whether his popularity will remain the same, wane, or increase, etc.

A bit of an anemic OP, I know, just interested to hear people's thoughts now that the election uncertainty is over.

Scary thing is it is a mandate in some ways. It is where and what the country is except for small swaths. He won 80% of the counties, picked up ground in 90% of the counties, and hammered the swing states. It's gonna be a heck of a thing to watch, as to just how historic and fateful it turns out.

So it looks like Trump is pussying out on his tariff threat to Canada

Ahh, concentration camps now, they are getting well on track from the fascist playbook

"US President Donald Trump has ordered the construction of a migrant detention facility in Guantanamo Bay which he said would hold as many as 30,000 people."

"...There are 15 prisoners currently being held there."

Be nice if we could say that Biden hadn't opened that door

It goes back to Obama - I lost total respect for him when he didn't close Guantanamo Bay.

Pretty sure Biden started chucking some migrants in

He couldn't do it, congress refused to do it. It's not something POTUS can do by himself because closing it had costs, and congress didn't appropriate the money for that to happen.

He did write an EO like 3 days into office (jan 2009) to close gitmo down.

He tried again several times.

Moving prisoners included costs that congress wasn't willing to allow.

Kinda incredible i have to defend Obama on that, but the idea that POTUS powers are greater than they are in reality is so embedded, people think POTUS is responsible for a lot of things that happen (or promises he can't keep) when he is not.

Applies to both parties ofc

he never actually sent anyone there but I remember there were articles saying the idea was being floated.

and now today we get this

hmmm

I was just going by teh BBC. Noit quite how I recalled it but they say there are migrants there. Not detained says biden whatever that means

The US has already been using a facility in Guantanamo - known as the Guantanamo Migrant Operations Center (GMOC) - for decades and through various administrations, both Republican and Democrat.

In a 2024 report, the International Refugee Assistance Project (IRAP) accused the government of secretly holding migrants there in "inhumane" conditions indefinitely after detaining them at sea.

The GMOC has principally housed migrants picked up at sea and was recently the subject of a Freedom of Information request by the American Civil Liberties Union for the disclosure of records about the site.

The Biden Administration responded that it "is not a detention facility and none of the migrants there are detained".
